Hello all.
Just want to get my frustrations out. I've been on CPAP for almost two months. I can sleep fine with my nasal pillows.. My problem is, I don't sleep much. I'll get up like 1 to 3 time a night for the bathroom, but can't get back to sleep most of the time. Often I have to take a sleeping pill to get to sleep, but if I get more then 5 hours, that's a lot for me. Even so, I'm still struggle staying awake after 10am everyday at work. I try not to take my provigil pills, but I don't want to have a accident at work as I work in a warehouse and do inventory while on a fork truck. I thought the cpap was going to be a life saver but now I'm thinking its more of a scam? These are just my frustrations. I can't keep functioning like this day after day.

Mitch,

I understand your frustration!!! It isn't any fun to have to strap a mask on at night and then still be exhausted the next day!! DId you have a sleep study done in a lab? Did they note any other sleep disorders -- such as restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement, or others? Those other sleep disorders can disrupt sleep as much as OSA. Check with your doctor about other sleep disorders.

Do you sleep with a pet? I know I sleep with my dog and he definitely interfers with my sleep.

How old is your mattress? An old worn out mattress can lead to disrupted sleep.

Do you have other underlaying medical conditions?

Do you practice good sleep hygiene?

Do you have GERD?

If these aren't contributing to your problem then --

I do know though that many of us didn't feel well rested right away. Each of us is very different and you body has been sleep deprived for a long time probably. It will take time to repay your sleep debt. Are you getting optimal treatment? Does you machine record useful information? Are you mouth breathing? Are you having mask leaks?

If you can let us know some more information some of us will try to help you.

I did have a sleep test 3 or 4 years ago. I tried the mask then, but could not sleep a wink with it.
Now three years in the future, I feel so bad from being tired that my family Dr sent me to a Sleep specialist. I was tested again and was able to sleep with the cpap this time.. The technician at the lab (what ever he's called ) set the cpap machine for 11 I believe and I slept for 4 hours and did not stop breathing once. Now I'm set up with a resmed swift II Nasal Pad mask. I'm use to it and I can even sleep on my stomach.

I sleep wiith two two small dogs, but they don't bother me. Oh yea, I sleep with my wife as well.
I am due to take a glucose tolerance test on April 4th. As far as other medical issues I have, I do have high cholesterol and take zocor for it. i'm aboout 30 to 50 pounds over weight, I don't do any exercise. I just play on the computer all the time. ( I fix pc's on the side ). Now, I have always had trouble sleeping all my life, but once I got to sleep, I was ok. I never ever get 8 hours of sleep even in my younger days. I think I covered it all and thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry to hear that your having so much trouble! There are numerous different reasons why this could be occuring. (i) do you wake up with a dry mouth? (ii) any headaches when you get up? (iii) during the night, are you experiencing any excessive sweating or a feeling of extreme "woozyness"?
Could you ask your wife if you are mouth breathing while asleep? That maybe affecting things.
I also feel the same. I don't use the Provigil all the time, and it took me about 3 - 6 months before I was able to use the CPAP with any result. I still don't sleep more than 5 hrs per night. It really doesn't make a difference whether I sleep 5 or 15 hrs I still feel the same. The CPAP is saving your life, it just takes some time getting use too. Don't give up on it. I have had several surgeries and need more but I haven't given up on the CPAP. I am 40yrs old have been on the CPAP for 8 years now going on 9 in Oct, I have two sons 6yrs and 3yrs and know I can't stop using it. Some days I am totally wrecked, devastated feeling like I can't function. My job requires complete concentration and can be very dangerous. I think that this is a great community, people just can't understand how serious this condition can be or what it puts our mind and body through each day. Take care and keep fighting there is so much to fight for.
