I had exactly that problem after just a few days of first wearing a mask (I don't recall exactly what model it was).  Like you, I thought it might be to do with the mask being over-tight, but loosening off the straps just lead to leaks.

I came to the conclusion that the mask just didn't fit the profile of my facial geometry.  I took the mask back to the Sleep Clinic and showed them the problem, and they gave me an Opus 360 mask with nasal pillows instead.  In short, I've never looked back - it's a much easier mask for me to use, and doesn't cause anything like the problems the first one did.  It can take a while to get the straps set up in the best way to keep the nasal pillow from leaking, and even now (2 years in) I still get the occasional night where the mask dislodges a lot and the leaking wakes me up, but overall a much better experience.

thank you very much for the suggestions, i will take it back to the sleep lab today and see what they say. i want this to work

thanks again

I agree with Kevin.  In my case it turned out I was using a mask that was too small for me.  I would guess that it invariably means that the mask is either not adjusted properly or doesn't fit your face.  If I were a nose breather, I personally would opt for the nasal pillows and bypass all the hassle of fitting problems, sores, bulky gear that interfere with changing positions, leaking, etc.
i am a mouth breather after i fall asleep so nasal mask is out for me, i did go to the sleep lab today and they gave me a nose guard so hope that will help, think i will have to wait for 6 months to get a new mask unless i pay for it myself.

I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Have you considered a chin strap to keep your mouth shut whilst you sleep?

The bridge of nose  skin is not used to being stressed like our hands and feet . I tried many options ....The mask I now use is the mirage quattro ff  . It has not caused any breakdown of bridge skin .  My wounds have healed. Good Sleep,Chris

I used the "Comfort Gel" (lol, comfort?) and it broke down the bridge of my nose terribly.  I had to quit using it.  Which was a bummer because they "nailed" everything on that mask except the nose bridge problem.

No other full-face mask that I've tried has caused it.

I think it's the design of the mask as I have read that many people have the same problem with this specific mask.

Ernistine... A nose guard?  Would you mind describing that to me?  My mask supplier has never suggested that.  Maybe with a description I can go to them and ask about it.  I LOVE the Comfort Gel mask and would love to be able to start using it again if the nose problem can be fixed.

To anyone who would know the answer to this question...  I too am a mouth breather but I use a full-face mask so I've figured it's okay since the air is going into my throat via my mouth, as opposed to escaping through my mouth if I was using a "nose mask" if that's the right term.

I've experimented, before falling asleep, with holding my mouth closed but the mask leaks when I close my mouth.  It doesn't leak when my mouth is open.

So anyhow, my question is, since it's a full-face mask, does it matter that I'm a mouth breather?

Thank you all!

Diane

Are you getting aerophaga? ( air in your belly)

ha-ha, I wish I could blame that for my belly! lol  No fortunately, I'm not having a problem with that, it sounds kinda painful... :o)

The best thing you can do for this is to hang your hose above your head so that theer is less tugging of the hose on your mask.

When placing your mask on your face start it a shade lower than where you ultimately want it and after getting the fit right, slide it up that slight distance to its proper placement. This turns the edges of the mask cushion under so that it isn't cutting into the bridge of your nose.

Padacheeks offers some great and attractive padding for various masks and mask headgear at reasonable prices.

Dr Scholl's moleskin cut to fit the mask works well for many.
