Mike asked me how sleep guide could help prepare me for my boards. This was not an easy question for me. With a few exceptions I have a great understandings of the basics. I may not be quite up to par on all the ways to treat apnea, but I do understand the disorder quite well. So I got to thinking. From what I have been told the test covers a great deal of sleep theory. I have studied cause and effect mainly putting of the why. I propose that we learn it together as it will help all of us. This should not be a hard task as most of my education on this matter is coming from the internet or the library. I invite you all to participate as much or as little as you want.

I have just finished reading Dr. Dement's book "The promise of Sleep" I am currently reading this link on sleep

http://www.sleephomepages.org/sleepsyllabus/sleephome.html

I invite you all to an open discussion of both of these pieces of sleep literature. I will also be posting discussions on all 88 sleep disorders in the coming days. If there is anything in particular that anyone would like to discuss first please let me know.

Eager to play. Thanks for inviting us in to learn along with you.
Remember you have to read to play. Or already be educated in sleep.
There are 88 sleep disorders? Wow!! I know about some of them -- but I never would have guessed 88.

I think it would be interesting to learn about some of the others -- and not just sleep apnea. It appears that some of the disorders coexist with others and so it maybe beneficial to learn more. I am so glad we have you professionals on board to learn from. You tend to tell us in terms we can understand, which is very valuable.

Hope this brings alot of discussion to the forum.
Thank you so much for this opportunity, Rock Hinkle!!!! Bless your heart. You are so generous w/your time w/us and now sharing this opportunity too. YOU are going to be an OUTSTANDING RPSGT! I've got a bit of a headstart on this but I am so glad you are sharing it w/the forum as well.
I read Dement's book and loved it. I have been dabbling with the sleep syllabus for a little while. Like I said I keep putting off the theory to learn the practical side of sleep. I will probably finish today.
Thus is sleep jnk. It is very hard to find updated stuff outside of the text books. Even with those only a few are fully updated. Essentials of Polysomnography which is vol 2 of principals of Polsomnography seems to be the most up to date on sleep. This one and another by Stephen lennok I belive are the current sleep text books in the schools. I am probably wrong on the spelling of stephen's last name, and I can't for the life of me ever remember the name of his book even though I have read both of them twice. Dement's Bible of sleep being "The Principals and Practices of Sleep Medicine" is another good one. It just weighs 50lbs. My point is that you have to read what is available and update it in your head as you go through it. Most books and publications still teach stage 4, and the old R&K scoring system. This is not a problem as long as you remember that both stage 3 and 4 are slow wave(SWS) or Delta wave sleep. The theories however do not really change.

Dement discusses the reasons for this in his book. He says that very little new research outside of Apnea is being done on sleep. Canada and Japan seem to be the only ones stil doing any kind of dream research with Japan leading that frontier. Even with all of the recent findings about bad sleep there seems to be a shortage of grant money for the subject.j n k said:
Rock,

Note that the copyright is 1997, so some of the info is a bit outdated. (For example, they still separate out stages 3 and 4.) Also be sure to note the disclaimer at
http://www.sleephomepages.org/sleepsyllabus/disclaimer.html#dis :

"Disclaimer:

Don't get me wrong--it looks like good stuff. But 12 years is a lifetime ago in sleep science, if they aren't keeping that material up to date.
Rock,

I have ordered the book, The Promise of Sleep by Dements, I also ordered the book, This Book Blows: a CPCP Bedside Companion by Mike Moran.

Have you read Sleep Apnea The Phantom of the Night:Overcoming Sleep Apnea Syndrome and Win Your Hidden Struggle to Breathe, Sleep and Live by T. Scott Johnson?

Just wondered what your professional opinion is of the above books. thanks a bunch. bee
I have not read those. I will put them on my list of reading material. You will really like Dement's book. Also check out Dr. Park's book Sleep Interrupted.

This is the grand daddy of them all Mike. Anyone who is interested in learning about sleep should have it. It covers everything from the pt side to the dr. side
