My apnea is under control with the use of Bipap. Now my sleep cycle is off and I am now taken Ambien(sleep meds) for eight months. Realizing I cannot kept on this med for ever,I elected to stop taken Ambien. Now I am falling asleep but awakening around 200am after going to bed around 1000pm.

Can anyone suggest some type of alternative natural substance that can induce sleep. I am meditating and not getting frustrated but I definitely need help! Thanks Bob

You are so right about Sonata. Everything is now working out with me! Off all meds except a low anti-depressant

Ambien worked well for me. I had the 4 hour sleep w/it too. Never did try the Ambien CR.

I just added one Tylenol tablet (NOT Tylenol PM) and that got me 5-6 hours of sleep and after a week of the Ambien I just toughed it out for several nights w/just the Tylenol (NOT Tylenol PM) and thereafter only needed an Ambien on occasion. Usually if I knew I had something coming up the next day that was a cause for excitement or worry.

Sonata was a joke. I might as well have taken a sugar pill.

Lunesta was good for a full 7 hours the ONE night I took one - BUT - the HOR-EYE-BUL aftertaste that lasted well into noon the next day despite multiple teeth brushings and mouth wash rinses and mint tablets .... it just was NOT worth it to me to take another Lunesta!!! That aftertaste was VILE.
Frank, what is your experience with this drug, zaleplon? It is pretty expensive and Judy said Sonata the prescription version of zaleplon, from what I understand from their web page, was a joke..
So if you don't mind tell us your experience with it.

Hi Mary.

I no longer wake up in the middle of the night and devour each and every minute of a good ol'sleep.

Thanks for your answer, Frank. I'd love to have a good sleeping pill in my medicine chest, but no
one will prescribe them for me. LOL Zaleplon is so expensive, on the order of $3.30 per pill for the small size order. I'm afraid I'll have to stick with good ole' benadryl , doxylamine, or melatonin for my good nights sleep.

Bob, have you tried melatonin? It is not taken just before sleep but aan hour or two before (correct me if I'm wrong someone). There also a number of herbal concoctions out there, have no idea if they work or not. You might try staying up a little later and beind sure you are really tired before bed. We also had a thread on music helping some of us get to sleep. Perhaps some type of music through headphones would help you get back to sleep. I'm surprised the medication in not helping, do you meditate in those wakeful times during the night? Sounds like you are doing everything right, it just might take a while for the effects of the sleep meds to completely wear off, you might be experienceing rebound insomnia. What do you do while you're awake? Good Luck
haha, good sleep comes a little costly these days. Sometimes you got to swallow it. Whatever works.

I love Zaleplon (which is just the generic for Sonata.) I take the lowest dose - 5 mg - for when I wake at 2 am. It's just enough to quiet my brain. unfortunately my doc is now restricting me to 15/mo due to dependency issues.

The half-life on Zaleplon is two hours, so I can still awake refreshed even after taking it a 2 or 3 am.

Plus it's pretty cheap, like 18 dollars for a 30 day supply.
