Hi - I have just been speaking to a friend in Edinburgh who has had sleep  apnoea for the last 10 years.  Since diagnosis he has had no follow up at all.............no overnight sleep study, no machine check, no mask replacement or anything......Is this normal in Scotland?????  I have advised him to go back to his GP at the very least and ask for a re-referral but just wondered what experience others have north of the border.  Any advice I can pass on?

Cheers

unfortunately this is normal
i was diagnosed April 2005
i moved 2007 before receiving my cpap and so lost my turn in the saga
2007 i informed my new doctor that i had sleep apnea and he sent me to be diagnosed again and confirmed that i had sleep apnea and so every week without fail i telephoned the sleep therapist for a machine which i received February 2008.

it has something to do with allocation of funds but i made myself a pest without being a pest and i am glad i did so as it is all new to me
No, I don't think your friend's experience is normal. It certainly hasn't been mine. I have had sleep apnoea for a similar length of time to your friend. Following diagnosis, I was given a CPAP machine through the sleep clinic in Edinburgh. I have had yearly follow up appointments, but with access to help from the clinic staff if needed at other times. Since sleep clinic established in Dundee, have been transferred to there. Machine checked annually and access to help available when needed as before. Has your friend contacted the sleep clinic where he was first diagnosed? They should be able to advise whether he needs a re- referral from GP.
Thanks Lisa and 99. Am in bonnie scotland on hols and visiting friiend tomorrow so will have further chat with him. Wondering if he has just 'falllen through the cracks' and thought lack of follow up normal.
Cheers

does your friend have internet access then you can show them this site and the comments made

Better still is to suggest membership to sleep guide

as is said it has to do with allocation of funds and where you are in that cycle if you are at the end of the funding you have a problem if you are at the begining of the funding you will probably have success

pester pester and pester without being a pest
Yes I think it is very likely your friend has just fallen through the cracks. Both sleep clinics I have dealt with have been really helpful, but they are very busy, so could see how someone might get overlooked. Also they have had quite a few upheavals over the years. Edinburgh clinic moved sites and other clinics were established elsewhere and patients transferred to these, so a number of possibilities there for getting missed. Hope your friend is successful in getting the needed support.
OK guys - met up with friend last night and discussed options with him. With a little encouragment from wife and daughter he is going to contact hospital again and ask for appointment. Will e-mail him links to the site too.

Thanks again

Cheers
