the stereotype of sleep apnea only affecting overweight folks is just that, a stereotype. unusual to see a news story catch on to this, though: http://health.msn.com/weight-loss/obesity/articlepage.aspx?cp-docum...

great article I am glad to see this info finally hitting the main stream. I especailly like the part about in lab studies being more efficient than portables. Hopefully they will publish something on narrow jaws soon. Would have been nice to have been in Seattle this week though.
This has to be pounded in primary care doctor's heads that significant sleep apnea can happen in young thin patients that don't snore.

I recently saw a very petite, short 90 pound 80 year old woman with a skinny neck with moderate OSA. She had very small jaws.
My grandson spent the night with me night before last. Typically when he spends the night he sleeps on the floor in the front room on an air mattress. But we have being having some storms and he asked if he could share my bed (he is 6) along with my 7 year old granddaughter. I said sure as I have a king bed. He snores like freight train. He woke me up several times with the snoring. I mentioned it to my daughter and she kind of shrugged it off. His other grandma is slender and also has sleep apnea as well. I know my daughter has expressed concerns over hubby possibly having sleep apnea -- but they choose to turn away from suggestions that he be tested. I am going to try to convince her son needs tested though.
I am not obese at all. Considering other things, I am not overweight either. Sleep apnoea should not be attached to obesity!
I once had a 105 lb 37 year old woman with very severe apnea. I also had an 18 year old 6'5'' 180 lb with extreme apnea. Soccer player very healthy looking kid until he went to sleep.
How lucky your grandson and daughter are to have you as a resource for your grandson's sleep breathing problem. Amazing how so many people just shrug it off, though. That's why spreading the word about the dangers of sleep apnea is such important work. We have to get over the "so what" factor.
