Cure for Sleep Apnea -- my BS detector fires wildly whenever I hear that phrase.  But today I spoke to a well regarded ENT who truly believes in a cure for Sleep Apnea -- losing weight and/or surgery.  His goal with every patient is to "cure" them.  I thought this was revolutionary.  But maybe I'm in the minority.

How many out there share the view that Sleep Apnea is "cureable"?

I think it depends on the person Mike. What is this ENT's definition of "cured". I have seen people lose weight and get off of CPAP. I have seen others lose weight, go through all of the surgeries and still have the same AHI. These types of treatment have been talked about for some time now. I would not call these ideas revolutionary.

Did this ENT tell you about how weight loss is generally more effective than surgery? By itself the results are almost the same as the 2 together at lowering AHI.
I feel sure that some people- my neighbor for example- are cured by surgery. And maybe losing weight helps others. But in general, short of a trach or possibly an MMA I have not read of any cures. I do know one person on the forum who was able to go off CPAP, but I never knew the reason why. But I'm just repeating what I've read here. I hope that ENT is right, did he give more details about what he does to insure a cure, or what his defiation of a cure is? It is a revolutionary idea given the statistics on surgery we hear.

I know alot of ENT's that i've called on for years for sleep labs and I can tell you that a very large part of their income comes from surgery that's what makes me skeptical about it. I agree with what Rock said i think most of us have seen both scenarios and weightloss and surgery can work but there is no blanket cure...... What i am curious about and no little about our tap devices and the efficacy they can have on patients with mild sleep apnea.
Thanks, Mary, Rock and Mark. I think he meant AHI < 5 by "cured," and no he didn't tell me that losing weight was just as effective as surgery. He seemed to be talking about the combination of weight loss and surgery.

Like Rock I think it depends on individuals AND a very good ENT.

As you know I am "currently" cured of my sleep apnea and at the beginning of the next month I am sceduled to my annual sleep test.

For me cured means AHI = 0.

Henning, that is great. I have forgotten what you did for a cure. Do you mind refreshing my memory?

Thanks, Henning, for an excellent explanation of all you've been through. Especially that you've beeen tested in a sleep study and declared cured. That's the proof we seek. Sorry you had to go through so many years of agony before discovering expiratory sleep apnea. I have to admit I'd never heard of it. It's helpful to know that if you aren't feeling better with CPAP it's worth researching and seeking the best medical opinions available until you find an answer.
Henning is only one of a few that I have known to get off of PAP. I had a pt go through gastric surgery and lose almost 200 ilbs. I have also talked to one other person that was Dx as cured of apnea. She went through pretty much the same as Henning.
