The brother of one of my daughter's best friends passed away last week.  He had severe sleep apnea and was sleeping without his equipment.  He went without oxygen to his brain for almost 30 minutes.  The EMTs did all they could and the ER put him on a respirator, but the family finally called it on Friday.  He was 45 years old.

Please accept my deepest condolences. It is definitely a reminder for all of us. God Bless!
I know exactly where you're coming from Eugene I suffer from Bipolar and many time just wanted to die however, I think of how my family and friends would feel if I was no longer here. Please get help for the depression if you're not already and if you are find a different doctor if you have to or different med's don't just give up there are people out there that do care about you even though you may not think so I felt the same way for many years until I found a few good friends that brought God back into my life I then realized He is all I need even when no one else is there for you He is. Please take care of yourself you do have a purpose.

I agree about getting help for the depression, but keep in mind that untreated sleep apnea can look a lot like depression -- the bits about not having energy and not enjoying things you used to, and especially about not wanting to get up in the morning! Sleeping with your cpap might well help some of your symptoms of depression. I know getting the cpap set up right and working well for you can be a pain but it might also turn your life around.

God bless!

What a reminder. I have been using a CPAP for 2-3 weeks now. The difference has been outstanding and I love my machine. I even named it "Pammy" (Every morning I have to give Pammy a bath, etc....) About 4 days ago, I somehow pulled it off in my sleep. I was lying there asleep and all the sudden, my body told me to wake up now and I couldn't. It seemed like a LONG time and I couldn't wake myself up. Finally, I just gasped so hard and loud. I was sure I woke up the neighbors. My heart rate was like 180 or more and it was beating so hard that it hurt! It took me a while to settle back down and it scared the wits out of me. The entire next day was terrible. That little incident wore me out completely. Everyone was having a hard time understanding why I was so tired and I told them, "You just try holding your breath for 5-10 minutes, maybe more, and see what kind of an effect that has on the rest of your day" Anyway, it scared me enough that I haven't pulled it off in my sleep since. I'm only 19 and I've got an entire life to live.
If you're pulling it off in your sleep there may be a reason. Sometimes people need an APAP rather than a CPAP, because the CPAP will actually cause apneas due to varying pressure needs during the sleep cycle.
The APAP will adjust to your pressure needs. Better check with your doc.
I am reminded of a comment an Atlanta psychiatrist made recently. He said that two thirds of his depressed patients have sleep apnea. He refers all of his patients with depression to a sleep specialist for an evaluation and treatment when positive for OSA.

I was pulling it off because it was too tight. I adjusted it and have not had the problem since.

So very sorry to hear about this. What a sober reminder for all of us! I have a very close friend who will not seek treatment for his sleep apnea because of lack of insurance coverage. He is afraid of the cost of diagnosis and treatment, but, in light of the possible ramifications of lack of treatment, it seems like a small price to pay.

Wish he could see this an other examples of what can happen when sleep apnea goes untreated. In addition to going without oxygen, it is very possible to suffer cardiac arrhythmia's, but, I'm sure all of us here know this. I tried to tell him, but, he's one of these people that think it will never happen to him.
this shows up how the system is seriously flawed

If it were not for a sleep apnea study and the corresponding use of a CPAP machine for several years, I would be dead. I was diagnosed with fairly severe Cardiomyopathy. After a year on high blood pressure medication, my condition had not improved. My Cardiologist sent me for a sleep study and consequently I started using a CPAP machine, and In about two years, my heart was healed. My Doctor said that I could tell people that I formerly had a Heart Condition.
Needless to say, I use it every night...period.
Just last night I woke up not breatheing the wife said it was about 2-3 min. till I started breathing. seemed like an hour to me . What is the best way to get your air back anyone know? Ive done this since I was a child everyone would joke about me not breatheing they said the devil was trying to take me. it sure felt like it last nite the wife always asks me if she should call an ambulance like I could answer her It would take at least half an hour anyway. Any one who knows the best way to get breatheing pls. e-mail me matthewmarch@ymail.com thks!
Does your wife shake you or wipe your face with a cold wash  cloth.  Don't understand why shaking you wouldn't get you started again.
