Questions To Wake Up - Or Spice Up - Our Local Apnea Support Group

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

After your sleep evaluation study did anyone set down with you with the printed results and explain them to you? Did you want them to?

After your xPAP titration study did anyone sit down with you with the printed results and explain them to you? Did you want them to?

Were you given a printed copy of your results with graphs (5+ pages) or just the doctor's dictated report (1-2 pages) or neither?

Do you know what an xPAP is? An APAP? A VPAP? A Bi-PAP?

Do you know the brand and model of xPAP machine you have?

Do you know the type and name of the xPAP mask you are using?

Do you know what your xPAP pressure is?

How many masks did you take home and try before you found THE one mask that was comfortable and relatively leak free?

How long have you been using this mask?

Have you gone back to your DME supplier for advice or assistance with your xPAP therapy?

Have you contacted your sleep lab or sleep doctor for advice or assistance with your xPAP therapy?

Do you feel you've gotten good service, advice and assistance from your DME supplier?

In what way could your local DME supplier be or have been of more assistance?

Judy, these are great questions. I forgot -- do you participate in an AWAKE group in your area?

Also, what's the "HON code"?
Nope. Neither A.W.A.K.E. group responded when contacted so I go to Covenant HealthCare's apnea support group in Saginaw, Michian.

HON Code = Health On the Net. A sign of reliable and credible health information.

Unfortunately, I got there late so the flyers didn't get distributed. They said they would distribute them next meeting - but that isn't until June so I think I just wasted 40 sheets of paper and a lotta toner.
After your sleep evaluation study did anyone set down with you with the printed results and explain them to you? Did you want them to? VERY BRIEF OVERVIEW....

After your xPAP titration study did anyone sit down with you with the printed results and explain them to you? Did you want them to? I DID NOT SEE THE PRINTED RESULTS....BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM.

Were you given a printed copy of your results with graphs (5+ pages) or just the doctor's dictated report (1-2 pages) or neither? NO - I AM NEW AT THIS....CAN I GET THIS FROM MY DOCTOR?

Do you know what an xPAP is? An APAP? A VPAP? SOME

Do you know the brand and model of xPAP machine you have? YES

Do you know the type and name of the xPAP mask you are using? YES

Do you know what your xPAP pressure is? NO

How many masks did you take home and try before you found THE one mask that was comfortable and relatively leak free?
ONLY ONE....AND I AM NOT SURE IT FITS PROPERLY. I AM NEW...AND GO BACK TO MY DR ON MAY 1. I AM HOPING THE CARD READER WILL TELL HIM IF IT IS LEAKING TOO MUCH. I WAKE UP AND IT IS SOMETIMES HISSING OR SLIGHTLY OFF MY FACE PERIODICALLY.
How long have you been using this mask? 3 WEEKS

Have you gone back to your DME supplier for advice or assistance with your xPAP therapy?
I CALLED TO ASK WHY IT WAS LEAKING. THEY HAD ME DIS-ASSEMBLE AND RE-ASSEMBLE...I'M NOT SURE IT MADE ANY DIFFERENCE.

Have you contacted your sleep lab or sleep doctor for advice or assistance with your xPAP therapy?
NOT YET
Do you feel you've gotten good service, advice and assistance from your DME supplier? THE SUPPLIER SEEMED HELPFUL... BUT I'M SO NEW...I AM NOT SURE I HAVE THIS ALL DOWN YET.

In what way could your local DME supplier be or have been of more assistance? A CALL AFTER A WEEK TO CHECK ON THE FIT WOULD BE GREAT. A CHEAT SHEET OF HOW TO HANDLE LEAKS OR PROBLEMS. I HAVE LEARNED MORE ONLINE THAN FROM MY DME.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In what way could your sleep doctor or sleep lab be or have been of more assistance?
EXPLAINING MY SLEEP TEST RESULTS. ALSO...THEY HAVE LIMITED THE DATA ACCESS ON MY MACHINE. THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. ON ONE HAND DOCTORS WANT US TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN HEALTH, BUT THEN THEY LIMIT THE DATA FROM THE PATIENT - THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME.

Did you have any problems navigating the Doctor/Insurance/DME minefield? NONE AT ALL.

Have you visited any online sleep apnea support forums?
YES...THAT IS HOW I AM EDUCATING MYSELF.
Which online sleep apnea forums have you visited?

THIS ONE AND WWW.SLEEPAPNEA.ORG
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which online sleep apnea forums do you prefer and would recommend to others? THIS ONE SEEMS EASIER TO NAVIGATE AND MORE ACTIVE.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you look for the HON code at the health websites and forums you visit online? NO

Thank you, MaryJ.

Yes, you can ask for those two reports from your sleep doctor. They are part of your medical records and assuming your are in the USA you have a legal right to them under HIPAA. The 5+ page report is usually referred to as the "full scored data summary report w/condensed graphs".
I wish we had a support group in this area, but none that I know of. We are in a rural community and I don't know how much activity the group would have. It seems so many simply do not care. My son-in-law's mother and an aunt have sleep apnea and use a machine and simply do not want to be bothered with the "trivial" stuff. I think it is sad -- but you can only do so much to help someone like that.
