Callie, one suggestion has been to lightly tape the mask to your face so that pulling off the mask pulls off the tape and wakes you. Usually time cures this problem.
Good luck.
I'm experiencing the same problem! Sometimes I'll wake up with no mask and the machine has been turned off...I have no recollection of doing that.
Last week was the worst...every night I'd wake up after 4 hrs. to find the mask lying next to the pillow. Argggh!
I've had this happen a few times. It seems to go in phases, although I did notice last summer around this time it happened alot. I eventually turned down my humidifier (eventually even turning it off during the summer) and that seemed to help.
The only other thing I've done is to chant "I will not take my mask off tonight. I will not take my mask off tonight. I will not take my mask off tonight." before going to bed. As crazy as it sounds, i think it actually seems to help.
I think its just a natural reaction because your body is not used to it. It used to happen to me so I invested in a cushioned mask which is more comfortable to wear, like this one: http://www.cpapandsupplies.com/opus-360-nasel-pillow-mask-mask-only...
and you literally can't feel it on and once you drift off you forget its on.
