I wonder if all of Dan's problems were cause by years of undiagnosed sleep apnea?

That's originally where I thought this story was going. Sounds likely.
Such a sad story. the connections between Alzheimer's and Sleep Apnea are only beginning to be understood. I know Dr. Mack Jones on this forum has explored the connection in depth and might have something interesting to say about this story.
I can't get away from it. Just this morning while waiting for my barber to finish a lady, I struck up a conversation with the lady's husband who was also waiting. It wasn't obvious at first but soon I noticed him searching for common words as he was relating some interesting stories to me. Then I started looking at his jaw and teeth - narrow jaw and crowded teeth. No doubt in my mind that the guy had OSAS and was suffering some level of dementia.

When they left and I got in the chair, I asked the barber about the man. The barber said, "He has Alzheimer's and his wife is having lots of problems with him." I said, "He doesn't have Alzheimer's, he has confusion and memory loss from sleep apnea." The barber said, "Yes, results of his sleep study were really bad, but his Alzheimer's is so bad that his wife cannot get him to use his CPAP."

What a shame, an interesting guy who had led a full life and travel in all hemispheres regularly. He appeared to be in his late sixties and his retirement life will not be fun. :(

This has to be prevented in the upcoming generations.
