I have just received a Phillips machine for a two month trial. They gave me two face "masks" to try, one that goes over the nose, and one that goes directly into the nostrils. I would love to hear from others as to their experience with this machine, and which face mask they prefer.

Thanks very much!!

Gary, can you be more precise about exactly which Phillips machine you received? There are a lot of different models out there. I can't speak to your mask as I wear a FitLife Total Face Mask, a different animal entirely from your nasal models.
Good luck!
It is a Philips Respironics REMstar Auto A-Flex. That's a mouth full!

Thanks for your reply!

I looked up the machine on cpap.com and it got good reviews. I particularly liked the "dry box" technology which prevents accidental water spill into the machine. I do not know if this is a fully data capable machine or the "handshake" to view your nightly data. Hopefully someone else will know this. This machine does have optional software so that you can track your therapy at home. Nice machine!

Yes, it has a chip inside which can be read to see how I am doing. It is extremely quiet, and I really like the humidifier function.
you have a PR system 1 the same as i have
it has an SD card and is fully data capable

Great!! How do you like it??
I am a big fan of the PR1. Of the 2 newest models it is my favorite.
I ave only used it twice, but really like it so far. One thing for sue, I don't like the "in the nostril" type mask!!
Hi Gary,
I started out using the nasal pillow type mask and liked it from the start. I was usually so comfortable that I would have to test the "exhaust" air flow holes to be sure the air was actually there. I think it is important with these to make sure you have the right size of nasal pillows for your nose. There are usually 3-4 sizes available. It may also depend on the pressure your cpap is set at whether the nasal pillows will work for you. Higher pressures - above 10 or 12 may not work so well with nasal pillows. I also have a Resmed Mirage Activa SLM - STD mask which is the type that fits over the nose completely, allowing the airflow to be broader and less direct into the nose. This worked well for me for a while, but the rim of it almost covers my mouth, which I don't always like, and the feeling of the cool air on my whole nose is not the most comfortable to me. With both types of mask, I need a chin strap to keep my mouth closed all night. My pressure range is 5-12 with average at 7. I still prefer the nasal pillows, but it is different for each user. I find that using a little "Ayr" nasal gel (from drugstore) or RoEzit gel (online cpap supply stores) on my nostrils regularly prevents the edge of my nostrils from becoming sore. The nasal pillows are much easier to clean and reassemble every day than the larger nasal mask.

Good luck finding your best fit, and keep in mind that what works now may change in the future.

I am not having much fun with either mask type device I have right now. I find that when I go to sleep, I start breathing through my mouth, which rather defeats the whole purpose. I am going to have to experiment and might end up having to try something that covers both my nose and mouth. Doesn't sound like much fun. Right now I prefer the one that covers my nose, and not the one that goes directly into the nostrils, but that sure could change!!

Thanks very much for your comment!

Gary, I know I'm a broken record on some issues, but check out the Liberty mask before you try any other thing, it's a lot more comfortable, and better than using chin straps.
