Patient Report on AliMed Therapy Putty
Tried this stuff for the first time last night. Initially, when I put the mask on and went to sleep, I thought, from the way it felt, that there was NO WAY the mask was gonna leak. :-)
I was wrong.
# 1. When I woke after ~ 7 hours sleep, I had massive leaks all around the bottom of my FF mask.
# 2. When I took it off, it was obvious I'd used too much putty. It was stuck EVERYWHERE! On my face, my pillowcase, my shirt, in my hair, my headgear, on my carpet!! (?), and worst of all, there's no way I can clean it off my nearly-new mask. It's EXTREMELY sticky (different from Silly Putty in that regard).
# 3. It took me nearly 1/2 hour to get it all off my face and out of my hair. Without fingernails, good luck!!! I can't get it off my shirt, carpet, pillowcase, harness and, again, there's NO WAY I'll be able to remove it from my mask--it attaches itself like the worst chewing gum I've ever seen. Not coming off!! I'm gonna try nail polish remover next, but that can't be used on the mask liner. It's just toast.
# 4. My new mask will have to be replaced unless DME can put another seal on it. (?)--it's a Mirage Quattro. Impossible to get the putty off of it--again, it sticks like glue, unlike Mack's Silicone Ear Plugs which peels off fairly easily. I haven't tried Mack's for leaks, only for nose padding.
# 5.This putty came with no instructions, no warnings. I followed Jason's directions re: spaghetti-size strings applied to edge of seal. (no blaming going on here, Jason--just info)--from the way it spread out all over the place, I used too much. Also I found it hard to handle because it was SO sticky, even to itself.
# 6. Just talked to my DME, Jeff--he said he can order me a new seal. However, I'm leaving for AZ on Monday and, frankly, I don't want to sleep with this junk again. So he said he'll pop a seal off another Quattro and put it on mine. I'm going in at noon. I am LUCKY to have the DME I have!! He's a service maestro......
# 7. I have 5 little tubs of this stuff, minus one night's usage!, which I'll give to anyone if they want to try it out. I can't get a refund--they'll give me a credit, but I don't know if they have anything else I need.
Jason, if you're using it in the lab, I'll ship it to you. You may have skills in applying it that I don't have, and I just don't want to mess with it again. Nor do I want to risk ruining another mask.
Same with any SG member--if you want to try it, I'll ship it to you, no $$. I'd rather see someone find a way to use it than throw it away. Which I'm close to doing!!!!! lol
Lord!, if I could just get leakage under control, I'd be so freakin' happy. It's the weight loss that's screwing things up--Jeff's tried so many masks on me, even some of the new foam-padded ones. They either don't fit or they leak when he fits them.
I hate the thought of having to tape the dumb thing to my face every night for the rest of my life--I'm NOT gonna stop CPAP, but at this point I'm not sure I'm getting much benefit from it. The progress I had made is definitely declining--I can tell by the way I feel.....dammit!!
Sooooooo, I'd welcome any input from anyone about this. It's becoming a real problem with my treatment. I'm 100% compliant and have been for months now.

Thank you, Susan!!! Walgreen's "spot" bandaids. My next trip in to town I will pick some up just to have on hand. I have this drawer w/Mack's Silicone Ear Plugs, Ayr Saline Nasal Gel and Spray, etc. in it as my "first aid" drawer for 02 and CPAP remedies.

Judy, I'm putting together a "supply bag" of all this little crap I might need so I can put my hands on it all in one place. I got that idea from someone on SG too, who has a little kit of CPAP stuff at home, so seems like a good idea for travel as well.
SleepGuide, and everyone on it, rocks. I've learned so much on here...and continue to learn nearly every single day.

Try rubbing alcohol. On another forum, somebody removed Silly Putty from their mask with rubbing alcohol -- it might work work with Therapy Putty, which I believe is also made of silicone oil and boric acid or borax.
I have a ball cap that has some Therapy Putty that oozed into it (the tub that the putty was kept in was cracked) that I am going to try it on..

Thanks for the idea, Tim. Do you know if alcohol is safe for the silicone on these masks? I seem to have a vague memory of someone saying alcohol disintegrates mask parts. (?) Anyone else reading this know?
Too late for the puttied-up mask--I took it to DME yesterday and he kept it, gave me a replacement for that one, plus another different kind of full face mask (which I need). I have no idea what he's gonna do with the old one.

Alcohol will ruin your mask.....much like the putty. :^(
Alcohol will stiffen it and cause it to crack.

LOL, Jason! Don't feel bad--hell, this whole treatment business is so much trial and error that I'm used to it by now. Not that I particularly enjoyed the putty debacle--matter of fact I was quite vocal during THAT little adventure--(imagine that!)--but nothing ventured, nothing gained. In THIS case, venture and gain nada!!! still lol.........
Actually the thing that strikes me the funniest is that I had that shit sent overnight (so I could wreck my mask a few days sooner than necessary!)
Ah well, the trials of life........no one died, the world's still spinning, my fire's still burning, life is good..............
I've definitely regained my sense of humor, thank God for everyone who has to deal with me, to say nothing of myself!!

Using rubbing alcohol one time to remove crud isn't going to damage the silicone, although long term usage of alcohol may be a problem. Even if there were a chance of damage, it is damaged already.

That's good to know, Tim, that one-time alcohol use probably won't hurt if I'm just removing junk from the mask. I don't think I'll be putting anything else directly onto any of my masks--I'm spooked now.
The mask I ruined is gone now anyway. DME kept it and gave me a new one. I'm tellin' 'ya, the endless search for "the" mask is making me a little weary. The problem is my losing weight. I wasn't much overweight to begin with but I need to finish losing what I've started here. With heart disease AND OSA, I'm in double jeopardy, so I'm not gonna carry unnecessary weight anymore. I've lost quite a bit so I'm darn happy about that!!
Problem with the mask situation is they fit initially and then leak as my face gets thinner. It's kinda thin anyway, so that just makes the mask fit less from the get-go. I can't be the only one with a thin face out here!!!!! What do they do with kids with their little faces?????
Anyway, 'scuse the short rant. It's just kinda frustrating. And thanks for clarifying about the alcohol deal.
