My 88 year old dad's oxygen level is low...76% sleeping, 86% active.  Bloodwork checking his oxygen is excellent.  He has a sleep study scheduled for sleep apnea.  Side note:  I, his daughter, have sleep apnea. The doctor has ordered oxygen for him dailly.  Can anyone explain the difference of the low oxygen levels with the finger oxygen tester and good bloodwork oxygen levels?

it should be above 90 below 88 is considered serious of course the higher it is the better

no varnish on finger nails try diffrent fingers or hands
This is just a guess, but since blood gases are drawn from arterial blood they would show the best case scenario. Perhaps the circulation in his extremities is decreased and the pulse ox detects lower levels of 02 in his fingers due to a decreased blood flow. As I said, just a guess.
Good luck, hope the 02 helps
MaryZ is correct. The blood gases drawn from arterial blood are the more reliable and most accurate. Her speculation about his circulation in his extremeties possibly being decreased is an excellent theory and I would concur w/that as well. That doesn't necessarily make us right, of course.
i concur to th at theory as well but that does not make it correct
you can try other areas like toes ears as well to get an overall picture
