Hello - I've been using a CPAP machine for about 12 years.  I absolutely love it...It changed my life.  When I had my sleep analysis years ago I was fitted for a machine and a technician came and set up my machine and I've had absolutely no problems...(my machine's pressure is set at 20).  After I began using my machine, it never dawned on me, but I never ever heard from my specialist since I started using it.  A couple of months ago, I decided to explore getting a new machine, a more compact one with a built in battery.  I travel to Europe and Asia a couple of times per year and it is difficult travelling with my bulky old model.  When I decided to purchase my new machine, I was told that I need a prescription.  I understood and I contacted my specialist.  His office told me they no longer have any records of my existence and I needed to come in for a visit.  I was fine with that, but they also told me that I will also need to have a complete sleep analysis done.  I told them I thought this was absolutely crazy, since I've been using my CPAP every night for the past 12 years and there was nothing else to test for or exam.  What does everyone else think?  Do they believe I should have a new sleep exam done or do they think this is a complete waste of money and this is one of the reasons why heathcare is a complete disaster?  Thanks

everything is money driven these days including not having your records
obvously you have been getting supplies for your machine try and jog thdem for your original prescrition and to fax or photocopy or send to you

who was your original prescribing doctor and ask why my records were not updated
do not be to nasty to the doctor as they hold the key for a new cpap. even offer to show them the cpap

who originally supplied your machine do they hold records etc
Ken, after 12 years I can see why they would want to do a new sleep test on you. It's a shame you got lost to follow up.
Your pressure needs may have changed one way or another. Do you have a data capable machine and have you been keeping up with your numbers so you have a clue, besides how you feel, about how you are doing?
Good Luck,
Mary Z
It doesnt surprise me at all that you will need a new sleep analysis. To get a new machine, which you should have your insurance pay for, you need an updated sleep study. It is the biggest pain in the butt. Besides its good to see where you are at anyway. Mary Z is right you may need a pressure change especially if you have lost or gained weight in the last 12 years. Sorry to be the downer.
There are a few services online where you can get an at-home sleep study. Just search CPAP Prescription or At Home Sleep Study.
I absolutely think that requiring a new sleep study is reasonable. A lot of insurance companies now allow home studies, which can save a lot of money.
12 years is a long time. you should get another study done, cause hey, we arent getting any younger! your weight, neck size , lotta things have changed, maybe. if you have insurance, check and see what they cover. i am not sure an at home sleep study is the best idea, but thats up to you and your doctor [or specialist]. as far as losing your file, try to remember what version windows was in use then! they purge files [throw out, shred] after 6 or 7 years, or it gets shoved up in some back room w 25000 other old files, stacked in boxes. best of luck to you.
