hi gwen it is importat that you finish the rest of your sleep study
i may be that a cpap is no good for you and you need something more specific for your condition which is very much like a cpap except that it assists in your breathing when you stop breathing all hi tech stuff
I can't imagine why a neurologist would tell you that CPAP wouldn't work for you. Were they a sleep specialist? The only thing that comes to mind is that you were having central apneas which are caused not from obstruction of the airway, but from the respiratory centers of the brain not sending your body the message to breathe. They do make machines to treat this. they act somewhat like a ventilator in that a minimum number of respirations can be set. The machine can be set to deliver a breath, or initiate a breath, say every ten seconds. These are a different machine from a CPAP or AUTO, but look the same- maybe a little larger. You would wear the same mask as for CPAP. I would ask for more of an expanation as to why CPAP would not work, to complete the sleep study, and perhaps see a different sleep specialist with all my records in hand (or sent out by the doctor's office). You certainly deserve a more understandable explanation and recommendation from the neurologist.
I am not diabetic, but am bipolar and have had lifelong depression.

Best of luck to you, Gwen. This certainly needs to be addressed and preferably before your surgery.
