Well, I don't know what relief to expect with the following test
results.Total sleep time 238.5, during that time I had 306 arrousals. Apnea
and hypopnea 8, LM arrousals 8, Snoring arrousals 40 and Ta-Da the one that
puzzles me, 253 non-specific arrousals. Sleep efficiency 62%. Then regarding
sleep stages = stage 1-17.0, stage 2-221.5, stage 3 none, stage REM none.

Over several years I have progressed from a CPAP to a BiPAP and now to a Respironics autosv Advanced.
You would think that with a name that impressive it would have me tap
dancing. That sure isn't happening. I have a neuromuscular disorder. I went to the MDA clinic the other day. Neither my neurologist nor the respiratory therapist there had any ideas. As of 2 nights ago I am using a Fitlife Total face mask. I took it off sometime during the first night but last night I kept it on all night. I know I have built up a sleep debt but I feel I should feel a tiny improvement or at least not worse but worse it is.

Thanks for the reply and references. I read as much as I could for now and printed everything out for more reading tomorrow. I think I will call the sleep lab tomorrow also. My contact there has been very helpful. I have been wondering if an AVAPS might not be better for me and now my wondering is intensified
a very rough aproximation is 300/4 which is = to 75 arousal per hour very rough
which puts in in a high catagory
anything above 30 is high

please correct my thinking if i am wrong in my assumtions
99 You are absolutely right in your assumptions. I guess I created a new category, extra, extra high.
i n k Do you know of any doctors that specialize in this type of problem?
The arousals in quedstion may have nothing to do with your breathing. Do you grind you teeth? This would cause the types of arousals you speak of. You may want to talk to your dentist.
I, too, had frequent "alpha intrusions" and were told they were the same as or similar to arousals, though I did not have them to the extent you have. I was told on this forum that chronic pain can cause this. I have sever chronic pain in my legs during the night due to a bak injury. When my pain medicine (darvon) is not enough I don't sleep well at all, feeling like I'm merely dozing through most of the night.
Good luck, I hope you can get a handle on this as it must make for a rough nights sleep.

I have been reading quite a bit and I am going to ask my doctors if small movements caused by myoclonus can trigger these arrousals. The pulmonologists and sleep office was closed Friday so I will call Monday. I will see my internist on Thursday.
Thank you to everyone. You have been so helpful.
Yes they can. There are not many studies on this. The ones that are out there say that these types of small tremors do not interrupt sleep. My own studies and research have produced quite different results. I have found that even the smallest finger twitch can interrupt sleep. Normal arousals are seen between the wave frequencies of 4-13hz. This is the same frequency as alpha (stage wake) or theta (stage 1) waves. tremors and myoclonus waves are typically seen at 4-12hz as well. This simularity makes it hard to tell the difference if someone does not know what they are looking for.

I'm sorry I haven't updated this topic. It has been an interesting few weeks. I oversee the care of my physically and mentally disabled niece. she lives on her own with part time caregivers and I have had to fire 2 successive caregivers in the past few weeks. That means that Jerry and I take over the caregiving. Thank goodness he is soooo good.at helping with her.

For the sleep problem I saw the doctor who is with the sleep center where I was tested. I won't even detail that meeting. He did give me samples of Nuvigil?? I took one early in the morning snd couldn;t sleep at all that night,

Next I called the sleep clinic at a large teaching hospital near me and explained my problem. The director of the department said she would like to see me herself. My appointment was 9:00 am last Friday. At this point 9 in the morning is a challenge to get out of bed much less go anyplace. I waited half an hour, was led into a room and interviewed by a Fellow . He asked intelligent questions and made intelligent comments. But at some point he said 'the doctor you were scheduled to see had an emergency so you will be seeing someone else.' The door opened and doctor I saw over 3 years ago walked in. I never followed up with him because I didn't like him. He didn't (I should say couldn't )even read my sleep study correctly. At one point he said 'this isn't really a sleep problem, it is a breathing problem'. No sh%%.

When I came home I said he asked more pysch sounding quetions than anything else. Sure enough I looked up his background. Sure enough, his training was in adult and then child psychiatry before he went into sleep. Saw my internist yesterday. She said 'I hope you made a fuss'. By the time I left last Friday I was too tired to make a fuss. So the upshot is that I don't know anything and with my niece's problems I haven t made another sleep appointment with the Doctor I was originally supposed to see. I will do that soon.
