provocative theory on male unwillingness to use CPAP raised by a gentleman in Florida I was talking to online:

"its probably some basic behavioral ecology for males 2 resist embracing what could be considered a weakness in a barbaric sense"

What does this theory say?

For myself, I have no unwillingness to use CPAP.
there is a strain of male patient amongst us who views CPAP as an affront to his masculinity and is very hostile to it.

I can't understand why.
I think that overall I have a harder time with my male patients than I do the woman. Men pout, and you can actually see it in the brainwaves. Older men are the worst as they are usually more set and comfortable in their ways. Kind of makes it hard to talk an 80 year old into using something he is dead set against.
I've witnessed a couple of grown men throw a tantrum about wearing a mask to bed at night. there was hostility and anger there that i haven't seen with a woman, although i suppose that's possible too.

I have had the issue of unwillingness as far as my ego. First impression, each of my kids laughed, my dog barked and went crazy, but I kept at it. The problem I have is that I go to sleep now, just fine, wearing the CPAP, but I wake at 3 a.m. againand find the mask on the floor....
Most of the problems that I have dealt with in female patients have been mainly due to claustorphobic issues. I would think that the fmale patients would have more vanity issues, but it seems to be the other way around. For the most part I feel that my female patients are much more in tune with their bodies, and are usually more eager to fix whatever might be wrong. At least in my experiences a woman will tell you right away whether or not she is going to be able to comply. A man will run a tech into the ground all night only to tell them "I can't do this" in the morning.

My husband was grumbling under his breath because I have to use a CPAP. He was totally against it and he wasn't even the one using it! He was the one that was constantly complaining that I wasn't breathing during the night and yet he doesn't want me using a CPAP. Hmmm, he has been looking at industrial strength wood chippers, maybe I should sleep with one eye open....
Lol that is too funny

Hey, sleeping with all this gear on & wind in my face is an unnatural act, so I understand anyone's resistance. On the other hand, grownups are supposed to deal with some things they don't like, like getting their teeth cleaned & having holiday dinners with the mother-in-law.

At the end of the day, anyone looking for excuses for not using CPAP will find them. I'm okay if someone decides against using this thing that has been proven to reduce or eliminate (in the titration study) a sleep apnea disorder he or she has been proven to have (in the PSG). My big concern is to make sure that the patient is quitting CPAP on his or her own, & not because of something I did or didn't do. If I have made every reasonable effort (and sometimes beyond) & ensured that my customer has run out of patience before I have, then I'm at peace with it.

That is my problem. I cant get comfortable and spend most of the night trying to keep it adjusted properly, By 3 am, I am so frustrated that in the floor it goes. I havent used mine for a couple of years
sounds like a mask comfort problem. have you tried other masks/mask sizes?
