contest put on by Breathe Right strips for spouses to tape their loved ones snoring -- designed to be humorous, like America's funniest videos. But I'm not amused...

"The Breathe Clear Nasal Strips division of HealthRight Products has just announced that it is launching the Loudest Snorer in America Video Contest.

With 50 million admitted snorers and likely that many more who snore but think they don't, HealthRight Products, LLC is giving spouses an partners of snorers a chance to settle the argument once and for all.

For those who have a spouse, partner or friend who is a loud, or funny snorer, an entry into the Loudest Snorer Video Contest brings with it a chance to win one of several prizes, including a years supply of Breathe Clear Nasal Strips for their "celebrity" snorer.

Submitted videos, 30-90 seconds in length, will be incorporated into a humorous YouTube and Facebook series that asks America to vote on the best entries. A little humor, a lot of noise.

To enter, contestants follow the contest instructions posted at the HealthRight Products site developed for this event: www.TheLoudestSnorer.com

Note: Snoring may be a symptom of a more serious condition known as Sleep Apnea. While normal snoring is caused by narrow airways, Sleep Apnea is a true breathing obstruction, which requires the sleeper to awaken to start breathing again. A person with sleep apnea wakes up many times a night to regain breathing, but usually remembers nothing at all about waking up. Some results of Sleep Apnea include feeling unrested, tired or lethargic during the day, or finding yourself irritable and short tempered due to a lack of sleep. You should consult a physician to determine if you suffer from this condition.

Now make a video then get some sleep... if you can."

Oh never mind. That's a good one but I will save it for another day. A little too soon to send some over the edge again. :)

I'd like to hear it. I thought what you said was funny. We are all dealing with issues, whether they be physical or emotional, some better deal with the issues using humor, some will deal with them by being serious. ..........

The irony is that they strike out at a friend of their cause who views the "Snoring Contest" with the same disdain as they do, but chooses to attack the contest with satire rather than a serious polemic or vulgar diatribe.

Best wishes to all for perfectly tweaked settings and an excellent weekend!
Hello Susan,

I, like Banyon, was poking fun at the promotion. All joking aside, promotions like this (though really stupid and poorly though out) bring forth opportunity to speak openly about snoring and the strong link to obstructive sleep apnea, with it's strong link to hypertension, heart disease, vascular disease, and a host of other health maladies.

All of this is very serious. My grandmother, grandfather, and father all use CPAP. Prior to me getting into this field (from the crap job of physical therapist...burrrr) we used to make fun of my grandpa for snoring loudly and falling asleep at all times with a toothpick in his mouth. The humor turned to dialogue between family and then dialogue between he and his doctor. One sleep study later and he's sleeping great thanking God everyday that we made him aware of this.

I don't think something like this will cause someone to not have sleep disordered breathing treated. I do believe that it will cause many people to start asking questions, which will in turn have them seek treatment.

When I was fresh in this field I'd get all militant and puffy pants with patients when they couldn't see the dangers of sleep apnea. They'd joke about it and I would think "by God this is not a laughing matter!" I'd promptly jump up on my soapbox and start to preach about all things sleep. Their eyes would glaze over and not hear a word I was saying.

My new approach is to joke with them and through the jokes I can deliver a clear and pointed message...all while having fun. The most important part is that they continue to listen.

Now, if anyone finished reading this entire thing....CONGRATULATIONS....you are the only one who made it!!!!

Best Regards,

Jason

Jason, I respect your opinion and your recs completely, as you well know. BUT, from MY perspective, you're way off base with this last comment..See my attached reply to the discussion if you want to know why I feel that way.

Future promotions being planned for clients by the same advertising agency: "America's Ugliest Precancerous Lesion", "America's Most Colorful Clogged Arteries", and "America's Highest Blood Sugar Level".
I think that this is a good thing. Good publicity for sleep! Everyone thought the biggest loser was a joke. It has helped kick start one of our nations biggest health events to date.
Good catch. I didn't notice that. It's confusing because the names are so similar.

NOTE: This is NOT from the Breathe Right company. It's from HealthRight Products, makers of Breathe Clear strips. Breathe Right is...well, it seems they're now a division of GlaxoSmithKline. Didn't know that until just now. At any rate, best not to go protesting against the wrong company.
