Has anyone used the hybrid mask (nasal pillows w/mouth mask)? I hate the full face mask because of confinement and leakage, but am a notorious mouth-breather. (tried every chin strap trick in the book). I'm thinking the hybrid may be my answer. If you've used the hybrid, would love to have your input before I buy one.
Thanks!

FYI -- On the members page, under advanced search, you can search by "hybrid" under the question about masks, and find who in the community uses it. Here's the link.
I know of several people that use the Hybrid. They have much success with it and are happy with it. If you go over to cpaptalk.com there is a thread about test driving a hybrid before you buy it. This would give you an inexpensive way to try for very little cost (only the amount of shipping). I will try to put the link to it: http://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic/t33434/Hybrid-TestDrive-Continues...

I have one and have used it a few times. I find it still too confining and like nasal pillow masks better. My favorite mask is the headrest/aura mask. Very little contact with your face.
Lynette,
I was just at my Pulmonologist today and saw a different type of nasal pillow mask that is shaped like a diamond, or triangular, and tried it on - as I currently use nasal pillows. I really liked the fit on this newer nasal pillow mask and my physician is going to call it in to my supplier and have it delivered to me next week! My doc said I would get a better fit with this newer type of nasal pillow mask and have less leakage than I currently do. I am very claustrophobic, so I cannot tolerate a full face mask or anything that would cover my mouth.
Have you considered trying any of the newer nasal pillows with headgear? This particular one is made by Respironics and when I receive it, I will post to the discussion board and let everyone know what I think of it and the fit. I am NOT a mouth breather, so I cannot help you in that respect, but I did notice another nasal pillow mask in the office that also covered the mouth, just for "mouth-breathers" and the doc asked me to try it on - but it made me feel closed in, so that would not work for me, but you may want to look into something along those lines.
Hope I have been helpful in some way.

Thanks Melodie, I would be very interested in knowing more about this mask. When you get it, let me know the name of it, would you? I'd have to check into the mouth-breather one, though, because keeping my mouth shut is a problem I seem to have both day and night! :-)

Thanks, Mike & sleepycarol, I'll check those out!
I've seen a number of folks try the hybrid mask, with mixed results. In general I think the smaller the seal, the better the result. That means, again in general, I prefer nasal masks to full face masks, & nasal pillows best of all. By that theory, hybrid masks are preferable to full face masks. They are a bit complex in comparison to a simple nasal pillows system, but when the mouth needs to be covered, hybrids are a good alternative to full face masks.
You may want to try taping your mouth shut with Nextcare tape!

Lynette,
The newer nasal pillow mask system I will be getting is made by Respironics, but I don't remember the details about it. As soon as I receive it, I will let you and everyone know all about it - item number, and everything. I will also ask my DME about the nasal pillow device that has the mouth cover included with it and get the information for you and post that also.

Glad to be of any help that I can!

Hi Trixie,

I'm new to this site..looks like a good one. My husband has sleep apnea and keeps it under control taping his mouth at night.

I was interested in hearing more about why you tape? Where you heard about it? I mentioned it on a respiratory group recently and really got blasted by one of the therapists..so I'm looking for information that professional people are suggesting it?

Thanks.

Pat

Welcome, Pat! You'll find a lot of great advice and people here. Glad you're joining us.

I had the same experience with respiratory therapists blasting the notion of taping the mouth closed to prevent mouth breathing. here's a thread from the forum on mouth taping that you might find interesting.

again, welcome!
