This caught my eye, "Cancer, AIDS, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are the most dangerous and destructive diseases on earth. OSA is reported to occur as many as 83% of women and 92% of men. This phenomenon occurs nightly when the tongue falls back and blocks the airway."
But then I read the rest of the link and was intrigued by the Full Breath Solution.
Any comments?

Just makes me wonder if we should try that first, and have a sleep study performed while using one of these to see if they are effective.

I'm surprised you didn't get more replies to your posting because it's really interesting. And in line with Peggy's idea, it would be interesting to find out what a sleep study without the dental devise -- and then a follow-up sleep study with the devise would show.

For someone who doesn't want to go through sleep testing, or use CPAP, this sounds like a viable alternative. Maybe Dr Park will comment.
I think the problem is proving that it works. Does an improvement in daytime sleepiness constitute success? Do you need a sleep study wearing it? It sounds as though many more people have OSA than cancer and AIDS, scary statistics.
Is the tongue the main problem? My impressions was that OSA could not only involve the tougue, but the soft palate, tonsils, uvula.... Maybe manual devices are the wave of the future. I can't imagine 83% to 92% of us on CPAP or having stimulators implanted, but I can imagine dental devices for that many people. Special dentist offices like they have for dentures, where this is all they do.
Interesting statistic, Banyon. That mouthpiece does sound like it would keep the tongue out of the way.

I posted earlier expressing interest in this article . . . and I remain interested - but I think I should add that I am such a believer in living the "good life", which for me includes xPAP, that I think the dental devise would be interesting to investigage IN ADDITION to xPAP.

My findings lead me to believe that the best therapy is produced by using both PAP and an oral device. The statement "This phenomenon occurs nightly when the tongue falls back and blocks the airway." is very misleading. The tongue and jaw falling back typically adds to the problem. True apnea is generated in the airway due to muscle atonia. While the oral device will reduce AHI for most it rarely has that big of an effect on the overall SBDs. My opinion does not matter much as I am not an MD or a dentist.

I am not sure what you want to talk about Banyon. I have mentioned in several post that apnea will soon be the number one killer in humans. It is no surpise to me to see it in publications. I have seen the worst that apnea can throw. It is not pretty.

Do you mean "it will soon be the number one killer" or do you mean it already is and "it will soon be recognized as the number one killer"?
I find it fascinating (a perverse fascination be it) that we entered the 21st century with the U.S. public and medical profession hardly aware of the devastation of SDB, much less the pervasiveness. Heavily treating the side effects of SDB and not suspecting the root cause of the side effects. How the hell could that have happened???
That must say something against personalized medicine and the need to transition to aut ... er, uh, .... never mind. :):):)

I would say that apnea is probably among the top 5 killers. I have personally seen what aids and cancer can do to the body, mind, and soul. Apnea is a little different when you think about diseases because it adds to so many different ailments. I could be wrong but I believe that heart disease is still considered to be the number one killer. The effects of apnea on the heart alone would help lift it to a high rank in the amount of deaths caused. Bad sleep just is just so detrimental to our bodies.
Apnea is caused by muscle atonia. This is a safety mechanism born from millions of years of evolution. How do we treat it without causing other severe side effects? To stop muscle atonia in humans could be the initiation of millions of of sleepwalkers. Newtons laws hold true to sleep. For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.
