Finally got my ASV machine and used it last night.  Felt a lot of pressure changes, but they were very smooth- not a sudden drop and increase like  Bilevel and more changes than AUTO.  It's a Respironics so I know it gives data averages every 7 and 30 days so I didn't even check this morning.  I figure it will be good for me to use it a solid week before I look at my AHI.

For those who are unaware of my difficulties- after 4 years on CPAP, Bilevel, or AUTO at every pressure and range available (including 30 IPAP)- I have had  a steadily rising AHI- last 30 day average was 30+.  I feel pretty good, don't desat, but the ASV worked in the lab and I would really like to have lower numbers.  The only reason my doc and I could come up with was my medications which are pretty heavy and necessary for my well being.  I do believe that to be the case.  I have  many more hypopneas than apneas and wonder if that can be due to shallow breathing rather than partial obstruction or reduction in airflow, though my Tidal Volumn has been better lately my AHI has not.

In any case I hope I can begin  to sleep less than 10-11 hours a night, get off Nuvigil, and have improvement in my depressive symptoms.  These were the reasons I pursued ASV in the first place.  I see the doc in a month, but will know for myself by then if it's working.

Any feedback from ASV or 'PAP users would be welcome.

Thanks

Good luck with it Mary, I know how you feel about getting off meds, I'm off all sleeping pills and have tapered down to half the antidepressant I was on. I'll taper down again over the Easter break and hope to be off it by the end of the year. Really hope it works well this time.

Keeping everything crossed for you Mary.  I had a short trial on the same machine, and it was brilliant.  Couldn't keep it though, as they're so expensive and I didn't really warrant the need for one.  You're better than me, as I just couldn't have resisted checking my AHI even after just one night :D  Will be watching this thread with real interest.  Good luck....

Well done Terry, for your progress at, sensibly, slowly coming off the meds.  You must be feeling really proud :)

Mary, Can I ask, do we have two Mary Z's on Sleep Guide, I get a little confused sometimes?

Terry, just in case I've not explained properly, I meant it's 'sensible' to come off the meds 'slowly.'  I would hate anyone to think I meant it's sensible to come off the meds, as some people absolutely need them.  However, there are also many people who've been put on them who were merely suffering anxiety/depression due to sleep deprivation before diagnosis.

Kath, I know what your talking about, it will take me 12 months to come off them fully. It doesn't help when you get the withdrawl symptoms each time I come down. Shouldn't you be asleep now?

Glad you understood + you're doing real well putting up with the withdrawal too

Got 35 mins left before my midnight curfew, which I don't always meet ;)  I'm a real Night Owl though!

Kath, have a good nights sleep then.

No, Terry, there's just one of me, but we do have at least one other Mary and an MHZ.

My avatar is my picture with my puppy (who is over a year old now).

Thanks Mary and a very cute puppy, I think animals know a lot of what we go through and help us.
