It is a shame that corporate America, and that includes the Health Care industry, has gotten so greedy. The desire for the almighty dollar (it used to be) has ruined many a good person. Doctors who charge exorbitant fees, hospitals that continue the rape of the public, labs, service providers, DME's that could care less about you, insurance companies, and on, and on, and on. Let's not forget the patients who will sue at the shift of the wind. This vicious cycle has to be broken in order for a “fix” to occur, but who will allow that to happen? "Not I" say all the above parties. Every player in the process knows but one thing - the way to the bank!
too bad that we can't even use that expression any more without qualifying it -- the "almighty dollar"

"Fogel had already left Harvard for Merck Research Laboratories, where he is now director of clinical research at its respiratory and allergy division"
Wouldn't his fabricated research warrant being banned from positions of authority especially in a research capacity? Geezz!
Doesn't instill a whole lotta confidence in Merck, does it?

On the other hand: They took a big hit some 20 years or so ago when they developed ivermectin, a wormer for horses and later dogs, etc. One of their researchers left Merck for Ciba-Geigy. That researcher used his ivermectin research experience to change ONE molecule resulting in milbemycin (sp?). Merck sued in court and won. But meanwhile lotsa $$$$ was lost to mibemycin. Merck did donate scads of ivermectin to an area of Africa that had a real epidemic of "river blindness", where contaminated water supplies allowed some worm to develop and work its way into the eyes of humans blinding them. Good humanitarian work - that also helped their safety and efficacy research as well as there were problems w/ivermectin crossing the blood brain barrier in Collies and related breeds often killing them.
Judy, once again your knowledge leaves me spll bound.

I bred and showed dogs for some 30 years, Rock. The veterinary profession isn't all that much different than the medical profession. I've seen veterinarians give owners a real snow job regarding their pet's health condition - and I've seen medical doctors do the same. There's not too much more refreshing than to have a veterinarian or a doctor honestly say "I don't know". That most likely isn't the answer we want to hear - but at least it is honest and can be respected for that.
I agree completely with this point. My estimation of a professional, physician, attorney, whatever, goes up quite a bit when the professional admits to not knowing the answer, but assuring me he or she will get it for me, and report back the findings, even if it's to say there are two sides to the story and that the answer is not straightforward or well understood.
