Expert Interview: Dr. Mack Jones on Neurologic Complications of Sleep Apnea

Please join me on Tuesday, January 25th at 8 PM Eastern when I will interview Dr. Mack Jones, neurologist, sleep physician, and author of the book, Deadly Sleep: Is Your Sleep Killing You? about some of the major neurologic complications of obstructive sleep apnea. In this fascinating and provocative discussion, Dr. Jones will be talking about:

- How sleep apnea can cause Alzheimer’s disease

- The link between multiple sclerosis and sleep apnea

- How ADHD and autism can be caused by sleep-breathing problems

- Seizures and sleep apnea

- And much more….

fyi -- Dr. Mack Jones is a member of this forum and a frequent contributor.  He is plain-spoken, passionate and knowledgeable.

Dr. Jones -- a friend of mine from the AWAKE meetings up here attended the Expert Interview and said it impacted her greatly.  Here's what she writes:

"He spoke about studies that show brain lesions in people with untreated sleep apnea…and he is convinced of a connection between sleep apnea and Alzeimer’s…Not that sleep apnea causes the dementia, but that if you have a genetic tendency towards dementia, sleep apnea could cause it to develop.  And there are studies showing that almost all Alzheimer’s patients have sleep apnea.  (Of course, this could be a matter of which comes first, the chicken or the egg).   He is a man in his seventies who has sleep apnea and whose father and grandfather both had Alzheimer’s, so he’s made it his life’s work to examine the connection.  I’m thinking about buying his book, “Deadly Sleep: Is Your Sleep Killing You?”

The only bright spot in his talk was the mention of evidence that at least in some instances, the brain lesions can be repaired/reduced once the sleep apnea is treated with CPAP.  (What happens to those of us who can’t tolerate CPAP?...That’s what I found so scary.)"
