Welcome to the group, Tawana! Very happy to have you here, and thanks for asking the question.

I'm just a patient like you, not a doctor, and i don't mean to alarm you, but i have heard of rare cases in which using Tap water in CPAP can cause you to inhale certain bacteria, causing Legionnaire's disease, a disorder that results in muscle aches. In any case, I always use distilled water in my CPAP and not tap water (bottled water if desperate and no distilled water is available).

How long has this been going on for you?
Thanks! I have been using the machine off and on for about a year now maybe a little over a year it actuallly happened the first time i used it. They had to switch the first machine out because it was to much air for me.

That is very interesting Mike. I have been told that a person can get sick from the tap water, but not to what extent. Do you have any info on this? I do alot of CPAP set ups for our trucker acoounts. This info would go far to help prove the importance of using distilled water.

I just found this on the subject.

Rock, my evidence on the connection between use of tap water and increased risk of contracting Legionnaire's disease is purely anecdotal. I heard it first from a pulmonologist, was skeptical, then asked another physician, this time a neurologist who also has a sleep sub-specialty, and she confirmed that it was certainly possible, given the kind of stuff floating around in our tap water.

Someone asked the same question to the cdc evidently. This I believe has prompted them to do their own study. Theyb are suppose to post the results on the first site that I posted.

Also on a lighter note Tawana your problem could be a simple vitamin defficiency. I have been reading up on this subject lately as my brother was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. He went in due to chronic back pain with occasional joint and chest pain. He was not happy with the diagnosis. after researching it and getting him on a good diet/vitamin regiment all but his back pain has gone away. This however has even got a little better. He is now at a spine specialist and doing very well.
Tawana I was sore in my chest when I first started using CPAP---I mean sore in my chest wall. It was as if I had to stretch out my ribs and everything to accomodate all that extra air, and it hurt. I eventually got over that, just as I would any muscle/ligament soreness. I wonder if you are only using yours once in a while and not consistently that you are just experienceing what I did, just over and over again. It is a huge lifestyle change to use the CPAP all the time, but well worth it from my point of view, and well worth the aches and pains of getting used to it.
