I COULD USE HELP INTERPRETING THE STATISTICAL INFORMATION FROM THE DATA CARD ON THE VPAP AUTO 25....IS THERE A RESOURCE OR A GUIDE THAT EXPLAINS INFORMATION RELATED TO RESSCAN?

I RECENTLY RECEIVED A COPY OF MY RESULTS FOR A NUMBER OF DAYS TRYING THE MACHINE. WHILE READING SOME RELATED INFORMATION YESTERDAY, I DECIDED TO LOOK AT MY STATS FOR THE FIRST TIME....I AM NOT SECURE INTERPRETING THEM BUT WHAT I NOTED RE THE LEAK L/MIN WAS THE FOLLOWING: 95TH PERCENTILE:8.4 AND MAXIMUM 151.2 AND MEDIAN 0.0. I SAW CAROLYNS POST THIS MORNING. JEFFS RESPONSE WHICH WAS REALLY GOOD SEEMS ALSO APPLICABLE ALSO TO ME BUT 151.2 WHAT?

I DONT UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE 95TH PERCENTILE OF ANYTHING HERE AND THERE IS NO TIME ENTRY ANYWHERE....

I AM HAVING COMPUTER DIFFICULTIES RIGHT NOW....SO I DONT KNOW IF I WILL BE ALBE TO FINISH.

I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN FOCUSED ON MY MACHINE AND HAVE NOT CONSIDERE MASK ISSUES RELEVANT TO ME.... I HAVE BEEN ONLY GETTING ABOOUT 4 HOURS OF SLEEP THE LAST FEW NITES AND I SUDDENLY BECAME AWARE THIS MORNING AS I WAS REACHING FOR COFFEE ...WHICH I RARELY DRINK... THAT I HAVE BEEN AND AM HAVING SIGNIFICANT APNEA SYMPTOMS.

FALING ASLEEP AT THE COMPUTER, IN FRONT OF THE TV, DROPPING THINGS AND MOSTLY LACK OFMENTAL CLARITY AND INABLILITY TO EXPRESS MYSELF CLEARLY. THINKING CLEARLY TAKES AN INCREDIBLE EFFORT. I HAD WANTED TO ASK SOME QUESTIONS THIS MORNING THATA RE IMPORTANT TO ME RE

THE MACHINE BUT THEY ARE MORE COMPLEX AND I WOULDNT EVEN BEGIN TO TRY TODAY BECAUSE I DONT KNOW IF I CAN EXPRESS MYSELF WELL. I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBELMS EXPRESSING MYSELF...THE COFFEE SEEMS TO HELP.

I HAVE BEEN TOTALLY STUNNED AT THIS REALIZATION...HOW COULD I NOT BE AWARE? I GUESS I HAVE BEEN THINKING THAT BECAUSE I AM COMPLIANT AND I HAVE A MACHINE FOR TREATMENT THAT I AM TAKING CARE OF THE ISSIUE..WHEN CLEARLY THERE MAY BE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM.I HAVE TO SOLVE...ITS DISTRESSING. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEEN WALKING IN A HAZE. GOOD GRIEF..

THIS IS CERTAINLY AN ARGUEMENT FOR A FULL DATA BASED MACHINE...RATHER THAN MY OLD RESPIRONICS THAT ONLY GIVES COMPLIANCE INFORMATION.

FOR NOW, I NEED TO LOOK AT WHETHER THE MASK OR MY APPLICATION OF IT IS AN ISSUE.

I READ A POST ROCK WROTE SEVERAL WEEKS AGO ABOUT MASK APPLICATION WHICH I THOUGHT WAS GOOD AND THEN DISCOUNTED MY NEED TO DO THAT...BECAUSE THE MASK IS COMFORTABLE, I FALL ASLEEP ON MY BACK..IT DOWSSNT SEEM TO BE LEAKING...BUT I RECALL ALOT THAT I HAVE AROUSALS AND TURN FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND HAVE TO ADUST THE MASK DURING THE NITE. I HAVE IGNORED THAT FOR AGES... I REALLY FEEL FOOLISH.

I LOVE THIS MACHINE AND I BREATHE EASILY THRU IT SO I AM NOT QUESTIONING THE SETTINGS BUT WHAT DO I KNOW?

ANYWAY..IF SOMEONE CAN GIVE ME AN OPINION ABOUT THOSE NUMBERS I WOULD SO APPRECIATE IT.

A RESOURCE RECOMMENDATION WOULD ALSO BE HELPFUL.. FOR RESSCAN INTERPRETATION.

I JUST CHECKED. MY MASK IS A RESPIRONICS COMFORT SERIES...PROFILE LIGHT I THINK I RECALL.

WHEN I PRINTED OUT THE USER GUIDE FOR THE MACHINE THERE WAS A LIST OF RECOMMENDED MASKS...AND S I WONDER...HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO HAVE A RESMED MASK TO ACCOMPANY THE RESMED MACHINE? OR IS IT JUST SALES RELATED INFORMATION?

SHOULD I SHUT OFF THE MACHINE WHEN IGET UP DURING THE NIGHT AND TURN IT BACK ON WHEN IRETURN TO BED? AND IF I DONT SHUT IF OFF AND LEAVE IT ON THEN THOSE NUMBERS WILL PROBABLY REFLECT MY ABSENCE AND HOW CAN THEY BE ACCURATE?

I GUESS THE MORAL OF THIS STORY FOR ME IS TO BE MORE VIGILANT...

FOR ANYONE THAT I MAY HAVE BABBLED TO CONFUSEDLY, MY DEEPEST APOLOGY.

NOW I AM GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER CUP OF COFFEE BECAUSE I WAS TOLD NOT TO SLEEP DURING THE DAY...

AND HOPE THAT I DONT NEED TO REPLACE MY COMPUTER....

JUST THINK HOW BORING IT WOULD BE IF LIFE WERE A STRAIGHT LINE...

THANHK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR LISTENING.. AND IN ADVANCE FOR ANY ADVICE THAT YOU MAY HAVE.

Just stick to your guns - you will NOT accept anything less than a FULLY DATA CAPABLE xPAP! Hopefully they will let you continue w/the VPAP Auto 25!!

Ask your provider or your sleep doctor if they've set the correct Mask Selection for your non-Resmed mask. One would have to look at the literature that comes w/your mask to see what the allowed vent rate is for that mask at your reported pressure and then look at the list of Resmed masks at the Resmed site to compare their allowed vent rates and set the Mask Selection for the Resmed mask w/the closest allowed vent rate to the mask you are using.

YES, shut off your VPAP when you get up during the night. You want the leak rate as accurate as possible and not influenced by those few extra seconds of your VPAP running w/your mask off.
jnk, do you know what software was used for this diagnostic study? I've started an "article" here at sleepguide to post results (w/o patient id) produced by the various PSG software.

No, glad to help, but right now, I'm working on a problem here at the cannery. I've got to figure out some way to get this 400-pound tuna into a seven-and-a-half ounce can.

I know it can be done, I've seen them in the store like that.

mollete

New Pants?
I wouldn't you to think that was meant towards you jnk.
You would have been proud of me...I definitely stuck to my guns...and i am very happy that i walked away with my own VPAP auto 25! Going there was anxiety producing because i had the impression that it would be impossible for me to get one...and i was prepared for more of the same...but in fact i think they must have decided it was easier to give it to me than to listen to me any longer.

now the mask question you raised is a great one..no it was not done i dont believe. i am using my old respironics mask..i did ask about getting another but was told this one was fine and indeed it is comfortable. I have to review how to put it on properly.....I will explore getting information regarding your mask comment..thank you very much

I didnt ask them to be certain that i have the complete sleep study information, but I will....I dont recall getting any graphics....

thank you for your information!

While you're at the doctor's, you might want to get copies of the complete (long) sleep reports in order to try to better understand what's going on. Everybody focuses on that one number, but saying "I have an AHI of xx.x" is the equivalent of describing a car to the trooper after a "hit-and-run" as "It was gray".

At the risk of making things totally confusing:

That AHI could have been taken totally out of context without taking into consideration the important factors of REM vs NREM, body position, central vs obstructive events and time.

For example, in re: time, if a particular subset of variables was being analyzed, only 2 respiratory events occurred during that subset, but the analysis period was only 60 seconds, then the extrapolated index (the "I" in AHI) would be 120. However, given that scenario, that data would probably be somewhere between unreliable to meaningless.

In response to the comment that the REM index would be higher, I don't believe that would necessarily be true-- rather, it would probably be lower because:

1. The apneas in REM are usually more severe because, among other things, arousal threshold would be higher, consequently apneas would be longer and thus AHI lower; or
2. You have central dysregulation and your REM AHI would have been/is MUCH lower.

That said, if the overall analysis is correct, the graphics of a night-long PSG at AHI 109.6 would be a sight to behold.

Claudette, Hang in there! I do turn my machine off when I go to the bathroom as I figure that time would look like a bad leak if I didn't turn it off.
Can you talk to a trusted DME, tech at the doctor's office, or the doctor? It sounds like you may need some machine adjustments.
If your mask seems to be working and not leaking you can match it to the closest other mask on the list. Here again is where you're DME may come in handy as some masks have different parameters as far as pressure needed to give the prescribed pressure.
Hopefully you'll get some better advice than mine, but I feel like the folks who know me and have my readings and know the machines are the ones to help me if I'm having real problems and it sounds like you are. I don't mean to imply folks on the forum can't help- they can and will, maybe mollete will step up (or another pro).

Mary...thanks so much for your input...I still have not done any reading or investigation re the mask so i dont really comprehend all of the implications of the various masks and their function vis a vis the machine....The numbers i posted before reflect those from the loaner machine I was using...so I wont know how badly the leak issue is until I return for my next appt which will be in one month....I do shut the machine off now if I need to get up which is something that i didnt do with my old respironics cause that was only measuring compliance.... claudette

Jeff, as you know,.I am not very computer literate so I apologize for things like the capital letters i use occasionally as well as the fact that my computer is not well making it difficult at times to do otherwise...... I am also a novice to message boards and forums and so i get lost here alot. ...Also, i have zero knowledge with regard to computer etiquette.

There is no need to apologize!

As i explained to you, it was certainly ok with me that you entered your data on my thread....it was relevant to what i hope to be able to interpret for myself one day, so it was a good place to enter it. There appear to be others who do know how to interpret it.. so I hope it was helpful for you.

I have absolutely no feeling of ownership of any thread i may initiate.....that is a foreign concept to me....I firmly believe that the more information added to any discussion, wherever it may be located, is potentially an advantage to everyone.

Therefore, you and everyone else are welcome to add anything to any question I might raise at any time. Its all an educational process for me..

Thank you very much for your help and support.... claudette

Thanks for that MaryZ.

I guess I should let it be known that Claudette did give me permission for the hijack of her thread in an E-mail when I apologized for it in E-mail to her as I was perpetrating it. So I don't think I'm being quite as rude as I may appear in this thread. Not this time, anyway. :-)

I thought it might be OK to use this thread for the discussion, since Claudette is looking into getting her PSG results and into getting the same home software I posted grabs of and has a machine very similar to mine (she uses an Auto 25 and I use a VPAP Auto of the same brand) and may have a few other similarities with my circumstances, too.

But this is still your thread, Claudette, and we are all here for you, as you know. I hope it is moving in a direction that is helpful to you too, not just me. If nothing else, it proves the wisdom of your earlier words about you, and how it applies to all of us in some ways:

"I . . . GUESS I HAVE BEEN THINKING THAT BECAUSE I AM COMPLIANT AND I HAVE A MACHINE FOR TREATMENT THAT I AM TAKING CARE OF THE ISSIUE..WHEN CLEARLY THERE MAY BE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM . . . "

That's the right way for us all to think. We all have to take control of our therapy at least to the extent of taking it seriously and using the data we have to figure things out as best we can. And that's what these boards are about as we learn from each others' experiences, hopefully.

jeff
I will try it tomorrow jeff....kinda late right now.........thanks..claudette

Claudette,

Your Auto 25 should allow you to get to your efficacy data, including "leak," when you press the right and left arrows down at the same time for three seconds. Does that work?

jeff
Jeff,

Thank you... but I think it will be quite a while before i get up to speed with everything.

Right now ..I just want to learn how the machine functions first.... I have to admit that I dont even know what comprises "efficacy data" . So it was hard for me to respond to any questions regarding them.

I did peruse the machine manual and I thought I saw reference to them .. I need to read the booklet thoroughly which I plan to do today....then I will be able to answer an earlier question you posed.....I do want to know about the leak issue...its a significant concern for me...

Sorry.... my caps comment was really not intended for you..you kindly alerted me once to the fact that some may take exception to them and it was to those individuals that I was directing that statement....

And i have to admit that when I looked back at what i posted....the appearance did overwhelm me....it really did not appear inviting to read....altho I too rather like caps...I really overdid it...I am sure that in my state of confusion here they will appear again, altho not intentionally.

Claudette,

Looks to me like you are getting up to speed very well on all this stuff. It is a learning process for all of us. The majority of us here are just learning the ropes. Some have experience in one area. Others have experience in another.

I am relatively new to the boards, myself, so I am certainly no etiquette expert. I don't mind all caps, myself. I kinda like it. I only mentioned it in case it made others quicker to respond to your post.

The main thing is that you understand that you belong here and that your questions are welcome and that others benefit from the questions you ask and the answers you get.

I have a feeling you are going to be an expert on that machine and getting great therapy with it in no time at all!

jeff
Claudette

Wanted to let you know that all of us had to learn somewhere. None of us were born knowing how to talk, walk, sit up, etc. I am glad you are determined to learn and so do not worry what others think of you. Keep posting and reading and you will soon be helping others with the knowledge you have gained!!

Your determination will pay off!!
