Years ago I had a sleep study, I can remember never really getting any sleep, I was in a strange room, wires hooked up all over the place, I just didn't sleep, anyway I went to get my results and was really almost dismissed that they said I was in deep sleep and I snored a little bit, well when I am home, I could wake the neighbors with my snoring, insurance cover very little and it took awhile to pay off, so I would like to get check again but really do not want to go through the same experience,

John,
You need to get checked again. This time you need to be aware of what you are getting for your dollar. Search around, ask questions about the different sleep labs in your area. Ask on this forum if anyone can suggest any labs in your area. Make sure you are prepared for the test...Bring your own pillow, comfortable sleep clothes, and make sure the lab you choose has a comfortable setup (no hospital beds). You can tour the lab before your study, just ask. Next make sure that you understand each step of the process. Know the difference between your diagnostic study, and your titration.
Last, Keep in mind that the effects of untreated sleep apnea far outweigh the cost of having a study. Read the following post about that... http://cpapcritic.com/?p=114 Good Luck.
Yeah, I was a bit disturbed when after my last sleep study (the night they made me sleep without my cpap) I know for a fact I didn't fall asleep till after 3am, but the test results showed that I was asleep. Kind of freaky.

But it is worth it to get dx and get on cpap or whatever other therapy you decide on. I wonder if one of those at home tests that have been mentioned on other threads here might work out better for you. (and if they're available where you are)

The good news is that now you know what to expect with the wires and such. Maybe that will help you to be more mentally prepared and able to sleep next time.

Anyway, with all the risks that come with OSA, be scared of dying more than scared of the testing. Maybe you can get someone to video tape you sleeping? Would that help show them what you mean? Would that help you feel more motivated to get the testing done?

Good luck! If you can get the help you need, it really does make an amazing difference in your quality of life!
