I'd like to get a sense of what other disorders people are suffering from other than Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea usually causes a lot of other problems.

I found out recently that i am prediabetic.  I think that if i had gone another few years without treating OSA, i would have been a full blown diabetic by now.

Overweight, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis in my neck and knees.
My only diagnosis concurrent to OSA/CSA is migraine. However, I think of myself as pre.....hypertensive, diabetic and with higher triglycerides than good; my PCP has not sounded the meds alarm so far. I am trying to work on all of this with preventive measures. Both parents have/had diabetes, but my fasting glucose is still very good. I believe I also have osteo-arthritis but have not gone to a specialist to have it confirmed. I had cataracts before age 50, with lens replacement for one eye and the other pending further development. I have found it difficult to lose weight (BMI about 30) though I have been trying. Exercising has been difficult with managing the migraines, arthritis and generally regular tiredness. Neither my pulmonologist or PCP have much to say about my shortness of breath as my lungs sound clear. I think my best bet is sticking with my APAP, losing 20-30 pounds, and exercising as much as possible. I also take lots of supplements as often as I can stand to swallow them, and feel worse when I don't. I still don't manage to get 8 hours of sleep, more like 6-7, but I figure 6-7 hours of real sleep with the APAP should do me better than 8 hours of severe apneas.

I found Dr. Park's recent blog entry to be the best description of the OSA/migraine effect that I experience. http://doctorstevenpark.com/migraines-heart-disease-sleep-apnea-2

I do get neck/headaches when I have not slept well, with the APAP. The pre-migraine state makes the mask headgear harder to tolerate, which I've learned is a big clue that a migraine is on the way. If I can't breathe well because of sinus swelling while sleeping, this triggers the migraine process. I believe my migraine and OSA/CSA conditions are related, though my docs have not discussed this with me. I try to remain grateful that I can deal with all this stuff before it all gets out of control, but it feels overwhelming at times. I know many of you have much more to cope with than I do, and your posts remind me of why I need to keep up the effort.
i can relate to a lot of what is said hear and must say i think doctors do not diagnose the problem or they look for other problems that are easily identifieable and take the easy way out and let problems fester, this may be down to overworked, tirednes etc, and now nations are suffering. i can see a chain of events to the illness that start with the heart
It does seem to me that most of us are suffering from multiple symptoms of an inter-connectedness without really knowing what the core cause is! One problem seems to cause another, etc., etc! In my particular case, I always blamed the Spinal Meningitis because I knew it had to do with something in the controllers section of the brain that was out of whack! I thought about the lack of oxygen in the blood, but could never get decent tests conducted! I knew my sleep patterns were bad, because I was always falling asleep watching TV or riding in a car, but I didn't hear anything about "Sleep Apnea" until after my 5th heart attack when they did my double by-pass and suggested a sleep study to find out why so much of it seemed oxygen-starved and scarred. (Most of the bottom-backside was dead muscle!) When I started losing organ function (eyes, kidneys, bladder, hearing, eyesight) I blamed the high fever, and brain swelling because that was the only thing the doctors could come up with at the time! (Remember, they don't teach a lot of this stuff in Medical School, depending on where the doctors go to school and what they actually know from their own experiences---which usually isn't much!) This "exercise is key to lose weight and feel better" is a "crock" if you haven't had sleep and don't have enough energy to get up out of bed in the morning or do anything meaningful during the day! Yes, I've lost weight over a six year period...from 235 down to 205! It was especially hard because it was not fat I was carrying, but weightlifters mass! "Lots of exercise will help you sleep better!" is another useless statement. Maybe, but it still doesn't help with the apnea! My wife used to wake me up in the middle of the night beating on my chest with her fists, yelling "Don't you die on me!!!" She would then explain how she had been awakened by me when I stopped breathing. (We now try to sleep in separate bedrooms!) A lot of my problem had to do with awareness! I didn't know what was going on during the night because I would be "dead to the world!" (Maybe closer than I realize!) I must finish on a positive note! When I first started using CPAP, it was difficult to get used to, but because I had to learn to sleep on my back because they split my chest like a chicken breast, I have gotten used to it, and don't get too tangled too often. I have even taken it to hotels, and had it beside my bed, but usually on the floor so I don't reach out and knock it off looking for the light! The biggest help for me here in Arizona has been with the "Mister", but I have broken the plastic tabs off four of the "Chinese-made" plastic masks. I now have one made in Australia, but it doesn't fit my round face well, so it leaks air all night! Besides, it seems to be too small as only my nose and upper lip are covered. Fun, fun, fun! Going to the Phoenix VA with the stuff to try again to get some "professional help" Wish me luck!

Hi,

Without my pillow, I would definitely snore and most likely have an apnea, as I have in the past.

By getting about two good REM sleep intervals during my 6 to seven hour sleep every night and controlling my sleeping posture, I am able breath easily, and wake up fresh. This balances out my pressure, and heart rate. I am 66 years of age, and I, (as yet) do not have high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart problems. I do have a family history with these conditions.

I personally believe that high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart problems are degenerative conditions and are initiated from the outside, creating a problem or condition on the inside. Rushing away to the doctor to get treated is a good start, but it is not the solution. A medical professional can control a condition and buy you time, but the solution or cure is within each one of us.

I have heard doctors say if you have diabetes, it is almost certain you have a heart problem; it then extends to macular degeneration, kidney failure, etc. Rather than resigning to these factors, learn to reverse them. It can be done.

So, rather than knowing ‘what else’ people suffer from besides OSA, ask them ‘what else’ are they trying to do to reverse their condition.
I don't attribute these other disorders to sleep apnea. Many of them were diagnosed before OSA.

I am marginally diabetic with Diabetes Mellitus type 2. I also have B12 deficiency anemia, lumbar disc disease with myelopathy, degenerative disc disease, metabolic encephalopathy, Barrets esophagus, hypertension, benign prostatic hypertrophy, restless leg syndrome, rem behavioral disorder, narcolepsy, perimeter neuropathy, and problems with depression and anxiety from dealing with all of this. I have some obstructive apneas, but primarily central apneas, and Cheynes-Stokes disordered breathing.

My research indicates that sleep disorders are present in most individuals with degenerative neurological disorders. I don't think it is simply coincidence.
I have to tell you that after reviewing these postings, I feel a whole lot healthier.
I DO feel like my problems pale in comparison to a lot here.. I think we should all get together and have a big slumber
party.. we would already have our costumes.. Darth Vader masks..bring our pillows , which we can't sleep w/out..the MUSIC all our CPAP and oxygen machines would make..and heck... we wouldn't need alcohol.. everyone has their own supply of meds. Those who can't sleep all night could hang out and talk..while the rest of us sleep on huge pallet on the floor tryin'
not to get our CPAP hoses tangled up.. ((slight grin)).
i would imaging some stress in ones life triggered these problems
and so i would put stress an then initaition of these problems

i know i had major major mind numbing stress on Monday May the 10, 1979 in a space of four hours where i think all my health problems began and continuing stress on top of stress for about two to three decades

I've heard (and this is totally anecdotal) that playing a wind instrument such as clarinet, sax, oboe, bassoon, etc can help with OSA because you work, train, and exercise many of the throat muscles and so it's easier for them to maintain an open airway at night. If this is true, then singing would probably be another avenue... Anyhow, I just wanted to post this to se if anyone else had heard of the same or has any experience.

Obesity, Controlled Hypertension, Bipolar Disorder, Hypothyroidism, Vitiligo
my health problems are so small and i congratulate you that are showing up and working through the big stuff.

my sleep study is pending next thursday. I have a high cholesterol, borderline hypothyroidism, low vit d, osteopena hips and spine and 40 pounds overweight. ( so i'm lazy , dont eat right and am chubby... lets just get honest folks )

two years ago i was sick sick sick .. aches and pain, then kidney stones kept coming - found out i had a tumor on the parathyroid glands , (behind thyroid gland ) web site and a great doctor saved my butt. Parathyroid.com but im rambling .. not related to whats happening now .. ?? aghhh .

I think im calling weight watchers .
Sounds good to me, have never been to a theme slumber party : ). When I travel on a limited budget, I stay in hostels. The reactions are interesting. Everything from others wanting a room change to one person telling me that her mother snores loud enough to rattle the windows. Said she'd follow up on it. I agree, I have lots of problems but not as many as so many others posting here. I am diabetic, hypothyroid, have osteo and gout, and just found out I have ischemia. Have refused their drugs. Have researched and started on a 'diet' to reduce my CRP. The drugs make me sick, and I'd rather feel as well as possible even if my life is shortened, but I honestly think it will be longer, with a better quality, without them.
