This is from a correspondence I've been having with Susan McCord, who gave me permission to share it with all you on the forum. Italicized emphasis is my own... Will be interested to hear what you guys think she should do:

"I've been sicker than a dog with this CPAP/sinus stuff since the day after Christmas. Nobody, including my sleep doc will really discuss it with me or else they just dismiss it. This has been going on, off and on, since shortly after I started CPAP in July.

Today I was at my cardiologist for a checkup, and was telling him about all this ongoing. Usually it goes away spontaneously in 2-3 days--this time it's hung on for 10 days so far. Can't stand it.

Anyway, cardiologist, who's also an internist prior, told me it's not uncommon at ALL for pts. on CPAP to have this and that I have an infection. I asked him why the MDs don't tell us about it--he and I have a VERY open relationship and he knows I can't stand having smoke blown up my ass--he told me it's because the sleep docs are so worried about compliance that they don't tell pts. about the possibility of sinus complications AND that it's not uncommon for them to avoid talking about it even if pts. bring it up. They tend to assign the sinus problems to something else.

I was mildly horrified and, frankly, I think he is too. He told me to talk to my PCP and get started on an antibiotic and whatever else PCP recs. He also said people usually stay off CPAP for a week or so till the infection clears. THAT scares me to death. I don't think I'm gonna do it. Internet says to d/c too, but I don't think I can......what do you think I should do???"

I'm not nearly as good about cleaning my gear as I ought to be, however, there doesn't appear to be any direct relationship between my cleaning of the CPAP, and my having sinus infections. For one thing, the pattern hasn't changed much, since I began using the CPAP; ever since Navy boot camp, I've had sinus infections on a regular basis.

Much of my problem with infection, currently, is likely to stem from our long, drawn out process of moving. It's been, pretty much, work really hard, to the point of exhaustion, then several days of not being worth a copper dime, before another round. Moreover, I've just started seeing a new psychiatrist, and he's had me drop a couple of meds, without tapering off - then he added another mood stabilizer, which I took for the first time last night. While it is true that I didn't manage to start my CPAP before crashing, it's never caused me to be totally wiped out, like I've been all day today.
i have just read something way out that is to eat salmon the red salmon the wild salmon i do know it that work but i say have some french fries with it as well with plenty of salt and vinegar
When one of our contacts called us about a product
he referred to as “truly bizarre,” I thought “How ‘out
there’ can it really be?” After all, we come across some
pretty unique and complex stuff almost daily in the
course of our research. But in this case, there really is
no other word to describe the novel treatment for cystic
fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and
other respiratory ailments that he told me about:
Bizarre sums it up nicely.
It’s a liquid formula of DNA called Mucolyxir that,
applied sublingually, helps dissolve airway-blocking
mucous. That’s right – DNA under your tongue to help
you breathe better: See what we mean by bizarre?
But not only does it appear to be safe and effective,
it also costs much less than you might expect for
something this revolutionary.
Ancient theory meets modern science
One of the primary theories explaining respiratory
diseases is that much of the mucous blocking the airways
is a result of the immune system’s effort to eliminate
bacteria from the lungs.
Mucolyxir’s developers, John McMichael and Allan
Lieberman, took that theory and further hypothesised
that such activity, over time, could result in
hypersensitivity that would exacerbate the problem of
mucous accumulation. To address this problem, they
turned to the ancient homeopathic concept of “like
cures like.”
As you’ll see below, much of the mucous build-up
involved in respiratory illnesses like cystic fibrosis and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is
caused by accumulated DNA. So McMichael and
Lieberman chose the “like” cure – DNA – as the basis
for their Mucolyxir formula.
DNA therapy interrupts vicious cycle
Inside the lungs, the scenario might go something
like this: Bacterial-DNA induces the production of
various interleukins (such as IL-8), which are associated
with inflammation. The presence of IL-8 sends
out a distress signal through your body. In turn,
responding immune cells attack and destroy the
invaders by engulfing them in mucous. But as the
immune cells respond, they spill their own DNA,
which is interpreted as an enemy invader in the respiratory
environment. This sparks another signal for
help, establishing a vicious and continually amplified
cycle as the immune cells are repeatedly called into
play.
Mucolyxir interrupts this cycle by reducing the
production of “signalling” interleukins in order to
decrease the production of the protective mucous,
which is often more harmful than helpful. It does
this in two ways: by regulating anti-DNA activity of
the immune system, and by clearing mucous to eliminate
matter clogging the airways.
Mucociliary clearance involves the movement of
the cilia (the tiny arm-like fibres on the cells lining
the bronchial tree), secretion of mucous, and movement
of water into and out of epithelial cells. In
plain English, that means that the tiny fibres in your
lungs are stimulated, causing mucous secretion and
movement of water, which, basically, forces you to
“cough up” the material clogging your airway. The
DNA in Mucolyxir stimulates this process.
The DNA that McMichael and Lieberman used in
creating Mucolyxir was extracted from salmon, but
it’s important to understand that there is no gene
transfer with this method of DNA use. In other
words, you won’t suddenly start showing characteristics
of salmon. I spoke to Dr. Lieberman to ask how
we can be sure that there’s no risk of this happening:
After all, you don’t need gills or fins.
He explained that Mucolyxir uses a microdose of
DNA, meaning that there is not even one full
genome present in the product. He pointed out that
we eat foreign DNA all the time: When you eat a
sardine, you are eating the complete sardine DNA,
yet you don’t take on any characteristics of a sardine.
Fortunately, it just doesn’t work that way.
Dr.McMichael noted that, based on his observations,
Mucolyxir appears to be “helpful in the treatment of
severe respiratory conditions like chronic bronchitis
and COPD. People treated with it demonstrate
significant improvements in objective parameters
such as improved pulmonary function leading to better
blood oxygenation efficiency and exercise ability.
This product has been formulated to address an
unmet medical need that affects a large number of
people worldwide.”
And that “large number” is growing every day.
While cigarette smoke and work environments (such
as textile manufacturing and mining) are the most
common causes of COPD, it’s not just the smokers,
miners, and manufacturers at risk. A new generation

I know that my insurer now recommends replacing the air hose and mask every 90 days, and replacing all filters every 30 days. This is a fairly recent change and costs the company 2-3 times more for supplies than their previous policies. I suspect they finally noticed a relationship between CPAP users and sinus problems. They even call me to remind me that it's time to replace the equipment.

Something must be going on - they just don't do this even with my maintenance medications.

I could be easily convinced there is a relationship between sinus problems and using contaminated equipment. I know if I call and want to replace my mask/hose/etc earlier than usual, all I have to say is I'm having sinus problems.

MY insurer would never go to this extreme if there was not a clearly identifiable issue.

Uhuh. Sure, you may believe this tripe, but the fact is, there is nothing "ancient" about Homeopathy. Developed in the late 18th century by German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, he was looking for something better than the current, dangerous practice, of blood-letting. Sadly, he chose to believe that "sympathic magic" was real ("like affects like"). A for effort, F for results.

You should NOT disinfect your CPAP. If you aren't aware of the likelyhood of creating "superbugs" that way, please do a bit of research, before giving such advice. Generally, when attempting to disinfect equipment, you'll end up killing most of the germs, but the remaining germs will begin to adapt to the substance that harmed them....ending up with a truly nasty bug. Boiling can kill the bugs, but is unlikely to leave your equipment happy.

Additionally, over-prescribing of antibiotics, with doctors rarely explaining to patients why they need to complete the treatment, leads to the same problem, but in your BODY.

My wife has been infected with a "superbug", and it has made her life hell ever since....no cure in sight, and it's eating her skin.

Well, for what it's worth, I have chronic sinus infections. My doctor says he doesn't think he's ever seen me without one, even if tht's not what I'm there for. Presently I'm on Zithromax for one.

I'm just getting started on the machine and I'm too dumb to know if it's made a difference. If I had a cold, that would present a problem.

I should add that I am on meds for my allergies at all times and I have used a squirt of Afrin before bed for forty years, maybe longer. I don't use it in the morning but if I'm going to lie down, I can't breathe through my nose without it. I also use a nose spray (RX) called Flonase, morning and evening.

You might want to consider the Afrin (get the generic; it's the same and it's cheaper) and just use it until the the infection is gone. Don't use it twice a day, as the directions say, as it's easy to get so that you need Afrin in order to breathe through your nose, due to a rebound effect.

Good Luck!
i remember a little bit more

the point of my argument was to eat salmon which somehow was in the quote i plagerised

As you’ll see below, much of the mucous build-up
involved in respiratory illnesses like cystic fibrosis and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is
caused by accumulated DNA. So McMichael and
Lieberman chose the “like” cure – DNA – as the basis
for their Mucolyxir formula.
DNA therapy interrupts vicious cycle
Inside the lungs, the scenario might go something
like this: Bacterial-DNA induces the production of
various interleukins (such as IL-8), which are associated
with inflammation. The presence of IL-8 sends
out a distress signal through your body. In turn,
responding immune cells attack and destroy the
invaders by engulfing them in mucous. But as the
immune cells respond, they spill their own DNA,
which is interpreted as an enemy invader in the respiratory
environment. This sparks another signal for
help, establishing a vicious and continually amplified
cycle as the immune cells are repeatedly called into
play.
Mucolyxir interrupts this cycle by reducing the
production of “signalling” interleukins in order to
decrease the production of the protective mucous,
which is often more harmful than helpful. It does
this in two ways: by regulating anti-DNA activity of
the immune system, and by clearing mucous to eliminate
matter clogging the airways.
Mucociliary clearance involves the movement of
the cilia (the tiny arm-like fibres on the cells lining
the bronchial tree), secretion of mucous, and movement
of water into and out of epithelial cells. In
plain English, that means that the tiny fibres in your
lungs are stimulated, causing mucous secretion and
movement of water, which, basically, forces you to
“cough up” the material clogging your airway. The
DNA in Mucolyxir stimulates this process.
The DNA that McMichael and Lieberman used in
creating Mucolyxir was extracted from salmon, but
it’s important to understand that there is no gene
transfer with this method of DNA use. In other
words, you won’t suddenly start showing characteristics
of salmon. I spoke to Dr. Lieberman to ask how
we can be sure that there’s no risk of this happening:
After all, you don’t need gills or fins.
He explained that Mucolyxir uses a microdose of
DNA, meaning that there is not even one full
genome present in the product. He pointed out that
we eat foreign DNA all the time: When you eat a
sardine, you are eating the complete sardine DNA,
yet you don’t take on any characteristics of a sardine.
Fortunately, it just doesn’t work that way.
Dr.McMichael noted that, based on his observations,
Mucolyxir appears to be “helpful in the treatment of
severe respiratory conditions like chronic bronchitis
and COPD. People treated with it demonstrate
significant improvements in objective parameters
such as improved pulmonary function leading to better
blood oxygenation efficiency and exercise ability.
This product has been formulated to address an
unmet medical need that affects a large number of
people worldwide.”
And that “large number” is growing every day.
While cigarette smoke and work environments (such
as textile manufacturing and mining) are the most
common causes of COPD, it’s not just the smokers,
miners, and manufacturers at risk. A new generation
