ResMed machines store the data inside the machine itself. One way to get the data into ResScan software is to use a card and a proprietary card-reader to transfer a copy of the data into a computer. Another method is to use a ResMed adapter to transfer the information using a USB cable. Your DME may be using either of those two methods for data transfer.

Some machines only record hours of use, while other machines also record info. like apnea/hypopnea index, percentage of mask leak, average pressure range, etc. in addition to hours of use. The model of your machine determines which info. you can transfer to a data card. Some machines do not have data cards at all.
Generally hours of usage are of greater interest to the DME company, since Medicare requires that a patient prove he/she is using the machine for so many hours a night. If the patient cannot prove usage, the machine is taken away and Medicare refuses payment.
Some doctors like the information one gets from the second type of machine, mentioned above, since it shows them how well CPAP is working for that person and can help them troubleshoot problems the patient may be having with therapy. If your doctor does not have a card reader and software to read the info., the DME can do it and fax a copy to the doctor. An example of how the info. might be used is this: A patient tells the doc that he is still pretty tired even after using the CPAP. The doc can see from his report that his apnea/hypopnea index is still a little higher than it should be, so the doc decides to raise the pressure a little and see if that helps.
also the card can be posted prior to an appointment so that it can be read beforehand and returned at the appointment
