Hi! I have had two nights on the CPAP with nasal pillows. I did feel different in the morning--a little more clear--but I still needed to nap during the day. I was still tired.

How long does it take to get back to living like a person without apnea? I have heard something about a "sleep debt." How long before major changes? Thanks! --Tom

Tommy, I am really glad that you are already feeling the the effects of your treatment. Sleep debt is a fickle thing. It is different for everyone. Some take weeks or months to pay off, others days. It is a very good sign that you are already seeing a difference. Good Luck!
Although I am ready to give up This device is painful, like the mask I had before and never wore. This is disheartening. The doctor said they had made improvements in CPAP, but this is no different. I am so sick of being tired!!!
Sounds like you have the wrong size mask. Do you have a good equipment provider?

Hi, Tommy. The sleep debt thing is different for everyone. And some people still have fatigue no matter what, but usually their daytime stamina is improved and they can stay awake if they are doing something. The remaining fatigue may also be caused by something else besides sleep apnea. I still have fatigue and can nap if given the opportunity. And I always fall asleep watching TV in the evening. But I am able to stay focused and energetic at work if necessary, which I was not able to do before CPAP treatment. I also have a hormone imbalance that my doctor is working on that is contributing to my fatigue. That's why I mention that some of the fatigue could be caused by something else.

Which mask are you using? The mask should not hurt or leak. It sounds like you don't have the best fit.

Tommy, I have never heard of sleep debt and I have been wearing a full comfort CPAP mask for two years. It took me about a week before I felt better, but I think that is because I was so very worn out from not sleeping much for three years. Most people don't like their masks tight, but I found that if it is not hurting and not hissing, then I am happy. I first noticed improvement when the nights seemed to go by quicker, then I knew I was sleeping longer and deeper. Using a small pillow helped me also and putting my head on the corner of it so it would not move the mask let me relax. It will take you a little time, but you will find your position so you can sleep more comfortably. It is so worth it to try, try and try again another way until you are able to adjust or adapt to it. Take care and be well.
