I just got a ResMed S9 with humidifier a couple of days ago, so I have used a CPAP at home for a total of 2 nights. The machine came from a DME provider with authorization from my insurance company (BCBS New Mexico). I am trying to understand the machine, and have downloaded the Clinician Manual for it.

I gather, from a post somewhere, that there are 4 S9 models: Escape, Escape Auto, Elite and AutoSet. But nowhere on the machine or the paperwork from the DME does it say which model I have! I suspect it is an Escape Auto, because (1) the insurance company isn't going to pay for much more machine than they need to meet the doctor's order and (2) the modes available from the clinical setup menu are CPAP and AUTOSET (no VPAP, BiPAP, etc.).

Is my educated guess correct?

How can I tell which model I have?

Thanks.

There is actually 9 different machines in the S9 family now counting CPAP, APAP, VPAP and ventilation devices.

Usually there is a white sticker on the back of the machine that gives the serial number and a few other numbers.  One will have a number like "REF 36005A".   If they left that sticker on, 36005 indicates AutoSet, 36075 indicates AutoSet for Her, 36002 indicates Escape Auto.

If you have bcbs I'm sure you are right. How are you liking cpap? Is it new to you or just a replacement.

Bruce, have a look on the Resmed Website and see if you can work it out, I don't think you would have a VPAP or BiPAP, I use a Resmed Autoset and find it works quite well. Let use know how you go and how you progress with CPAP and if you have any other questions i.e. Mask. I gather it didn't come in a box. The other option is to ring the DME provider when they open next.

My machine has REF 36005 on the back, so it must be an AutoSet.  It also has AutoSet on the top, but I thought that was just an indication of a feature rather than a model (it also has EPR on the top).  I am surprised to find that they provided the more premium AutoSet model rather than the Escape model, but perhaps it has something to do with the DME's keeping fewer models in stock and I notice the cost is not that much more.  The good thing is that I can try autotitration if I decide to.

I have now used CPAP for just 3 nights, and am still tweaking things.  First night, had  straps too loose and felt a lot of leakage; second night too tight and woke up with headache; last night better, though the headgear is an uncomfortable annoyance.  Humidity doesn't seem to be doing much for me -- I have increased it from 3.0 (out of 6) to 4.5, and still wake up with a very dry throat.  I'm using a chin strap, and the first 2 nights showed 0.0 leakage, but last night showed 4.2 L/min, so maybe I opened my mouth more.  I have to download the software to read the data in more detail...

Thanks, all, for your replies.
