Here is the link to an interesting USA Today article (July 24) on sleep disorders being related to public transportation accidents, many fatal.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-07-23-sleepypilots_N.htm

I have a friend who is a truck driver and has obvious sleep apnea symptoms, but will not go for testing, because his insurance will not cover the cost. I also saw that Schneider freight now covers the cost of testing and equipment for all their drivers,as their accident rate went down dramatically for drivers diagnosed with and receiving therapy for OSA..

Thanks for posting that Sherry. I have a trucker friend and if you are diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, you aren't allowed to drive until it is treated. This is prudent for public safety, but can be a big burden on a driver if their health care coverage isn't sufficient and the interval between diagnosis and therapy is long. Hopefully as the awareness increases, the trucking companies will see that it's in their interest overall to provide the coverage.

I was pretty amazed at the lack of timeliness of prescriptions for therapy for my sleep apnea (AHI = 111 SpO2 < 65%). It'd be a pretty big blow to someone tho who didn't have sufficient insurance coverage to have a month or more of work furlough followed by a big medical bill!
Here is some info for you.

I find it odd that his insurance will not cover the cost as apnea is now the #1 reimbursable medical procedure that you can have done. If D.O.T. finds out that he has untreated apnea they will pull his CDL.
