I have a love/hate relationship with my CPAP machine. I have trouble falling asleep with my mask on, sometimes it can take me hours to really fall into a deep sleep. However, once I fall asleep I sleep very well and very deeply. I awake refreshed, but it is often an hour or more after my alarm goes off, and I sleep right through it. Does anyone have any advice? I have thought about putting a timer on my CPAP's power cord so it shuts off when my alarm does, but I don't know if this would damage the CPAP machine, or me.
Thanks,
-Todd

sounds to me as if your body is loving soaking up all the good, deep, restorative sleep the CPAP machine gives to you, and just wants to make up for the large sleep debt you must have accrued all these years of not being treated with the machine. my advice would be to modify your sleep schedule so that you go to sleep earlier and allow your body to get that extra hour or so it wantsd. you can help this along by dimming the lights/avoiding light earlier on in the night before you go to sleep, as well as food, drinks, exercise, smoking, etc.

i wonder why you have trouble falling asleep with the mask on -- an alternative to the modification of your sleep schedule might be to work on that, perhaps by asking a doctor to prescribe something to help you relax when it's time to use the mask, or by acclimating yourself to the mask during the day by watching tv or reading a book with it on so that it's not quite as strange to your brain by the time you go to sleep. would you be willing to try any of these suggestions?
I agree with MIke. I would also try going to sleep earlier until you get used to the machine. Try reading a half hour before you decide to go to bed. A sleep aid might help but I would use it as a last resort.
Yeah, I have tried taking a relaxer, which really works, but I don't want to take one every night, so they remain effective when I do really use them.
I have tried putting the mask on earlier and reading, which seems to help. My CPAP has this Ramp setting that starts with low notches up the pressure over time. I am going to try that right now in fact. Let's see if it works!
