We have a new member who just joined whose profile says someone he  (joseph graham) cares about is using a "nippy 3" bilevel machine via a trach.  Since we've had an ongoing discussion about trachs  and thought of them as a cure, I'm really hoping he'll see this and post his friends story.

yes, indeed. trach was the standard (and only) treatment for Sleep Apnea up until the 80s.
I talked further to Joseph, and his child has a disease which causes seizures. So we're not talking about an adult here.
I don't think he would mind if I post what he told me.
"Daughter has lennox gastaut syndrome but has been diagnosed with central sleep apnea triggered by seizures should be on adapto servo vent but is on nippy 3 bi level vent which is causing problems, doctors wont listen and just want to keep trachy in despite being capped off during day and not needing it for respiratory problems, I diagnosed the problem a year before doctors got round to aggreeing to a sleep study"
I looked it up and it's a pretty bad disease.
