I know that my DME told me how often nasal pillows, masks, tubes etc would/should be replaced and have been searching for my notes on this. Do you have recommendations? And why do they get replaced, do they wear out?

Over time your mask will wear out. You will find the head gear will stretch and lose its elasticity and it will become more difficult for the cushion to maintain a good seal. One sign of an extremely warn out cushion would be dimples. Basically as your mask wears out you will find it harder to get a good seal and will constantly be adjusting the headgear. A good seal is essential to benefiting the most from your therapy.
