I
am a 25 year old male college student with idiopathic hypersomnia and
ADD, possible mild OCD. I have spent the past several years seeking
diagnosis and treatment for this condition yet the answers continue to
elude me. Though similar to narcolepsy, I do not experience cataplexy
or sleep paralysis but do experience hypnogogic halucinations.
Numerous sleep studies show a mild sleep apnea without oxygen desaturation (93) - most providers do not feel this contributes to the disabling sleep
attacks I experience while processing information. I am currently using
CPAP but don't feel it has any effect on my condition.
As mentioned, I am a college student. During class lectures I get sleepy, lose focus and am asleep within minutes. Classmates continually attempt
to rouse me to no avail. I am an RN in the ER but my job is at risk due
to my inability to focus and process information quickly. Needless to
say, as this condition has come to define my very life I also
experience depression.
At various times and in various combinations I have tried Provigil, Nuvigil, Vyvance, Adderal ER, Adderall IR, Ritalin, Ambien, Effexor, Lunesta, Prozac, Paxil,
Wellbutrin, Lexapro, Buspar, Celexa, Klonopin, Lorazepam and Xyrem.
This is by no means a complete list but a representation of years of
attempts to create a manageable life.
I am hoping to locate any information regarding anyone who has experienced similar symptoms. I had been seen by specialists throughout the west coast, most recently Stanford. I am beyond desperate to find some relief or at the very least some coping skills as I contemplate my future monopolized by this condition. If anyone has any information or suggestions I would be tremendously grateful to hear from you.

Wow, I'm amazed at your efforts to pursue diagnosis and treatment with no positive results. You truly have gone to any lengths, I wish I could offer some help Daniel, but this is far beyond my experience.

Mary Z.
How many hours of sleep a night do you average?
It seems as though your job in the ER, being upright and moving around rather quickly would keep you stimulated and awake. This really is a problem, do you fall asllep on your feet at times, and to second Rock, how much do you sleep at night?
Hello Daniel,

I am truly sorry to hear of your long and hard difficulties. You surely deserve credit for all your efforts to find resolutions. My experience does not match yours except that I am very tired and, therefore, have been doing some research. I am attaching a research paper on CFS which includes experts in the field and their affiliated institutions in case you would want to contact any of them to find out if they might have any advise for you.

My best to you,
Renee
