I have owned three different CPAP machines over the last twenty years. The first in the early nineties and then again around 2000. I have never been able to last even one night using them and usually gave up and just lived with the snoring, the choking, gasping for air and general lethargy and tiredness. This time I did a split sleep study (my first). The second night the technicians took the time to find a setting that was right for me. I used the nasal pillows (which are much improved from the ones in 2000) and was surprised when the Tech woke me up to go to work. I usually am screaming for a nap by noon each day. I was amazed at the energy I had. I just got my own machine and I am now determined to use it each and every time I sleep. Much more comfortable than previous attempts. So don't give up and make sure your physician uses a lab that will take the time to get everything right. Third times a charm.

Congratulations. Sometimes it's easy to forget how new this whole CPAP thing really is. The very first CPAPs were in the mid 1980s. While by no means perfect, masks have improved tremendously in the last five years. I often compare CPAP therapy to Optometry. Think about the state of Optometry 25 years after the first glasses were made. How accurate were the prescriptions back then? How comfortable were the glasses?
It seems that as research on sleep levels off research into the actual machines takes off. Just in the last year since I began working in this field I have seen a big change in masks.
Good luck and hope that you finally are able to tolerate your machine.
I am on number 2 too and it is great !! Keeep the faith it will only continue to get better and better as you sleep!!
The therapy is only going to be as good as your commitment. You have made it this far and it seems like you want to finish. Don't give up.
