Somewhat off-topic but did anyone notice w/their kids that as youngsters they were early to bed and early to rise - UNTIL - they reached their teens? At which time they switched to staying up half the night and needing to sleep late in the morning. Or even if they weren't late to bed they still needed to sleep in late in the morning?

I had a son who from birth was an early to sleep, early to rise individual until his teens at which time he switched to late to sleep and late to rise in the morning. Mornings just were NOT his "thing". It wasn't until his late 20s that he reverted back to early to sleep, early to rise.

I had a daughter who was always early to bed, early to rise who when she hit her teens remained an early to bed, but became late to rise, who by her early to mid 20s reverted back to early to sleep, early to rise.

I have friends whose kids have always been late to sleep and late to rise, or who started out as early to bed, early to rise who reverted to late to bed, late to rise in their teens. Some stayed "night" people, some reverted back to early to bed, early to rise.

I was always a "night owl" as far back as I can remember UNTIL I hit my 60s. Now I'm still a night owl but an early morning riser even tho I don't want to be. I WANT that 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM sleep. Those two hours are my BEST hours of sleep. I feel better even if those were my ONLY two hours of sleep than if I get 8 hours of sleep but wake prior to 6:30.

There seems to be something about the hormone changes in the teens that affect sleep, you think?

I agree Judy.

I have five kids and one of them in particular was a night owl and early riser even as a baby, didn't sleep much during the day either. It seemed he was like the energizer bunny, always going. Then he hit his teens and he continued to be a night owl, but slept till all hours of the day. He is still pretty much like that, having a baby recently though has changed his sleep pattern alot though LOL.

Daughter number 1 suffers from insomnia, so she goes to bed really late (typically between 3 and 4 a.m.) and sleeps late. Of course she likes to sleep in, but when the schedule doesn't permit it, she still goes to bed late and gets up early.

I have always been an early to bed person, needing 10 hours of sleep to feel great. I don't seem to do well with only 8 hours of sleep and am draggy during the day, even with therapy. If I get 10, I am good. It is funny though that this summer my routine has changed. I have been going to bed after midnight most nights and then getting up between 9 and 10. I am feeling so much better during the day, have more energy, not as depressed etc. I did replace our mattress to a latex foam one that I really like with a memory foam topper. I don't know if that change is why.
Teens are still growing children and need their sleep. The amount is still debated I have read anywhere from 9 to 10 hours. The "Teen" feels they are adults and ready to run with the big dogs but still are children. They crash after midnight, 1, 2, etc and then continue to go into delta sleep and its heck to awaken them early. Sorry to any teens I may have just offended.
Infancy is our time of greatest growth, followed by adolescence. They are expending tons of energy on growth and need more sleep..
