Canadian researchers have elucidated nine out of 10 causes to stroke.
This includes not Sleep apnea. But on the other hand this includes a large number of the same factors which are the hallmarks of sleep apnea.
So the question is whether it is a chicken or the egg question. What is cause and what is effect.

That's part of the problem with sleep apnea, the chicken or the egg. It's really hard to tell what came first regarding symptoms unless the symptoms resolve with CPAP. Most of us will probably never know if we had heart disease or propensity for stroke (taking family history into account) before our apnea was diagnosed. The anecdotal evidence is convincing-- forum members who lost family members due to what was probably untreated sleep apnea. Good discussion, Henning.

Here is a recent study showing that Stroke and Sleep apnea is very closely related.

This is just one study among many.
This does not mean that the foregoing investigation is inappropriate, but perhaps only that it is not deep enough.
All in all it just shows that science investigations have to be taken with a grain of salt.
