I have been previously on a CPAP; presently on a BiPAP with various full-face and nasal masks.  I have 2 problems that I can't seem to solve.  The more major of the two, in my opinion, is that no matter which mask I use or whether or not CPAP or BiPAP unit was in use, after approx. 1-1.5 hrs of use, I wake up from a 'sound sleep' with a horrible sore throat, which sometimes takes hours to resolve.  I usually fall asleep nose breathing using the ramp feature with little or no problem; once asleep, I believe the sore throat is directly related to mouth breathing which at some point in time takes over for my initial nose breathing.  No matter which setting we use on the humidifier the result is the same.  Preheating the water for the reservoir made no difference.  Adding Aloe to the water made no difference.  Would adding/adapting a nebulizer to the mask be of any use?  Anyone have any experience(s) similar to this?  My second problem involves headaches from pressure of the mask seals on my sinuses or when using a full-face mask, the forehead support.  Headache can be by itself, but is usually accompanied by the sore throat.

Perals of wisdom, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.  I truly believe I will derive great benefit for myself if I can get more than 1 hour of use and w/o a sore throat as a result.  Thanks in advance.

Respectfully yours,

Art - The sore throat definitely sounds humidification related.  At ResMed we don't ever advocate adding anything other than distilled water to your humidifier.  Your HME should be willing and able to help out with a humidification issue.  If you try that path and don't get anywhere, let's see what we can do here.

Regarding strap tightness, it sounds like there is an issue with mask fitting.  If it's one of our masks, you can find videos entitled 'tips and tricks' and 'mask fitting guide' on our YouTube channel for our most popular masks.  http://www.youtube.com/user/ResMedAmericas.

Art, you are right. It's from mouth breathing after falling asleep; I have the exact same issues. I finally found a couple of solutions. (I'm using a Swft FX nasal pillows mask most nights now.)

Sometimes I tape my mouth using the Buteyko method (tape vertical down the middle of the lips) but the best solution so far for me is any device that keep the lips closed. One such device (that I have) is the Ultimate Chin Strap. Before that came along I'd use an Ace bandage or a non-stick wide "tape". I call it Vetwrap because I first discovered it when my dogs came home with a bandage after a blood draw, for example.

The pressure on head and face is another problem. One can use Pad-a-Cheeks, which has fleece that cover the the straps on the cheeks and across the back of the neck. There are other variations of that too. For pressure on the face I use RemZzz mask liners. They considerably take away the mask discomfort. There are variations on that too.

The things we go through! Hope these possibilities help you like they helped me.
