I found your post really enlightening. My late mother was a narcoleptic and, indeed, was studied at the Stanford Sleep Laboratory.

Several of my siblings (I have eleven and, yes, you read that right) likewise seem to have sleep problems. I alerted all of them once I was diagnosed since there is a genetic component to SA and all of us seem to have sleep problems.

A physician brother would have alerted the rest of us if SA had occurred to him (he's an eye surgeon) so I rang the alarm. Result? One sister has a breathing disorder and borderline sleep apnea. Another has a problem which she suspects is apnea, but keeps putting off having an overnight study. Go figure.She's not stupid (she's a lawyer) but maybe she's in denial.

I had a boyfriend whose sleep cycle was (if memory serves) 26 or 27 hours. It was manageable while he was a graduate student working on a doctorate and could work at his own pace, more or less. He remained self-employed all his life but died young. Now that I've learned more about disordered sleep, I suspect that his self-employment and early death may have been related to his sleep cycle disorder. The self-employment was his way of adapting to the demands of earning a living; disordered sleep may have been a contributing factor in his early death.

Sleep is challenging indeed, isn't it!
