Several yrs ago when I was married to my now ex husband he went thru a sleep study and as a result was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, to my knowledge he is still not treating his sleep apnea.

Now its my "turn" my neighbour recently walked past my window and laughed her head off at how loud I was snoring, I told me doc, as a result of answering yes to every other question she asked me I am now being sent for a sleep study.  Shes sure I have it as well, which may be causing some of my weight issues.

My question...IF I have sleep apnea are my dating days going to be doomed?  Besides the positive health benefits how else will this affect my life?

Regards,

Single Mum of 3.

cherrypie, your dating days are not over. Thank goodness for that neighbor. If you do have sleep apnea she may well have saved your life. The mask and the machine my take some getting used to, I took to it like a duck to water. The best case scenario is that you will start waking up more alert and with more energy during the day. You will be more motivated to do physical things hence the weight loss possibility. Besides what could be more important than the positive health benefits? It takes a little time to clean your gear, but not that much. Besides getting strapped up for the night I haven't found it changed my life. I did search a while for the right mask. Think positive. Good luck on the sleep study.

Hey, CherryPie, look at it this way, a CPAP just might be the avenue to meeting MORE eligible dating partners! Check around and be sure to ask if there is a local A.W.A.K.E. or other apnea support group. Your local hospital might have a sleep center and sponsor local apnea support group meetings. *wicked grin*. When one door closes another always opens.

Besides, dating doesn't necessarily mean hopping into bed right off the bat. AND they don't have to end in "sleep overs" at first either. You can start out w/a few "visits" and then "Home, James!". You don't put your mask and PAP on until you are ready to SLEEP anyway. And who sleeps w/the lights on? By that time you should have a good idea if the guy is worth your time and comfortable w/you and your PAP and mask. If he isn't who the heck needs or wants him? He's just a "boy toy" until you find someone worth investing the rest of your life on.

Lets face it, YOUR health is more important than some shallow "boy toy".
Hi Cherry:

I get this question alot. As Judy said, CPAP doesn't get used until it's time to SLEEP. I recognize that anxiety about a prospective partner's reaction to CPAP is a valid issue. Really though, if CPAP is enough to scare him off, he ain't a keeper. It would be part of the package like your ex-husband, your kids & your funny looking toes (okay, I guessed on the last one). Be who you are, & good riddance to the bums who don't see how great that is.
