Here is one for you Physicians.
Interesting night to say the least. Approximately an hour after going to bed I awakened.
There was a feeling of gloom or dread. Tried to sit up and could not move. Panic started to overwhelm me.
In just another second the thought “Sleep paralysis” and it had a calming effect. Dozed back off and it happened again. The third time still panic stricken tried to sit up. Well of course couldn’t move. Then what seemed like minutes it wore off. I sat up, got out of bed. Went to bathroom and went back to bed. About two hours later it happened again but a little different. Woke up and thought something was wrong the fear and dread was classic and it wore off quick but, started falling back to sleep going into REM very aware of my surroundings the paralysis reoccurred before complete sleep onset. I recognize that I was headed into sleep onset dreaming because there was a camel in my room. I do not believe it was a hypnogogic hallucination because of the paralysis.
I just came off a 3 day rotation not sleeping more than ten hours in those three days. Took a valium my MD gave me for the very first time since sleep was evading me. Do you think that the excessive tiredness and the valium were the triggers for the cluster of sleep paralysis episodes?

I could be wrong, but can't hypnogogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis happen at the same time? Dr. dement refers to both symptoms in his book as an explanation to U.F.O. encounters and such.
that is something I am not sure... I know its rare to find something I do not know about..LOL Just kidding
i am sure that there is not much about sleep that you have not experienced. I can't find the book right now to give you an exact reference. Which is odd because up until recently I carried it around like it was a security blanket. in the book Dr. Dement refers to old stories of demonic and godly visitations, as well as the more recent UFO phenomenon, as they may be the effects of sleep paralysis and hypnogogic hallucinations. He states that these "visions" could have been the effects of narcolepsy, or chemical/herbal induced. I have done some of my own research on the UFO craze. It seems that a high percentage of these stories start out with the victim in bed unable to move as the aliens have their way with them. i know that it sounds crazy, but it makes sense when you put it into context with the symptoms of narcolepsy.

Why a camel?

On a side note it seems that the more I learn about sleep the harder it gets to achieve it.
When I was a personality on the radio we talked in depth about sleep paralysis. This was of interest to many with the UFO or Old Hag stories. I under stand all that just trying to figure out why I had a cluster of episodes last evening. I am sure it had something to do with Stress, Sleep debt, and trying valium for the first time.
maybe it's time for a vacation.
Here is my take on your scenario. You were obviously severely sleep deprived/stressed which normally would have resulted in prolonged deep sleep to 'make up' for the loss. Valium prolonged and deepened your apneas, increasing your effective CPAP pressure needs, so that your machine no longer maintained an open airway for all breaths. These apneas caused arousals during REM sleep. Sleep paralysis and/or hypnopompic hallucinations can be experienced when aroused during REM sleep.
My contention is that apneas caused these arousals and this would not have happened had been on an APAP machine because the machine would have adjusted to the change in pressure needs (and of course you could have downloaded the smart card the next morning and seen exactly what happened).
I do agree with you here.. I do have APAP but have been using it like CPAP the settings were off not sure how that happened. It came to umm my attention this very morning. I realized on my days off I have been awakening at 5am. I do not remember dreaming ,however as men know we have a built in REM indicator. PAP unit was at 9cm. My unit was set for 12/8 up to 16/12. My old BiPAP was set at 14/10 with an AHI of ZERO according to my last polysomnogram. So something is fishy.. taking unit in this morning.
