question from a New Yorker:

Message: hi, i think i'm going to have to go for a sleep apnea study, and my doctor's office has suggested a place called "Sleep-Wake" at 275 Seventh Ave.  the whole spending the night in a strange place hooked up to monitors makes me kind of uncomfortable to begin with, so i was wondering if your group might know something about this facility? or perhaps have a recommendation of another facility that your members might have had a good experience with?  thank you for any advice.

Do you trust your docs offices recommendation?  Are you going in for an appointment before your sleep study?  You could ask for a tour and see how the rooms look and how the place feels.  Sorry, I don't know that area of the country.

I hear good things about Drs Burshtin and Rapoport with NYU's sleep center. For home test look into Dr Stern at BlueSleep Center downtown.

I am a (very satisfied) Dr. Burshtin patient. Check Sleep Medicine Associates on West 26th Street.

I know nothing about the clinic that you've been advised to visit. I do agree with Mary Z's advice, however.

Also, I first went to a different sleep disorder clinic (Sleep Disorder Clinic on West 55th) and was completely misdiagnosed (told I had insomnia) and never prescribed an overnight study. When I finally went to Dr. Burshtin and did an overnight, the results showed that I had a severe sleep apnea condition. I'm appalled that the first place didn't suspect that I might have a really serious condition.
