I am near the end of my fifth month using CPAP. On the whole, it's gone extremely well. But I've run into a recent puzzle.

I've had problems off on and on with leakage that's higher than ideal. I had a recent consultation with a sleep doctor who looked at my data and thought it was going well. He said that my leakage was inevitable because I was registering fairly high pressure (range of 17 to 17.5). He added that if I can lose some weight (I'm well overweight) it would reduce the pressure and that would reduce the leakage.

Fairly recently, however, my pressure has risen to the range of 19 to 19.5. I absolutely can't figure out why. I haven't gained weight; in fact, my weight is a little lower than before. Everything else seems about the same. My leakage scores have been high, but all my other scores have been good.

Any thoughts? Many thanks,

Bob

Bob,

Could be as simple as having the mask on too tight. Replacing the seal or having another mask fit appointment with your DME company may help.

Also, what mask are you using? Are you using a full face or nasal or nasal pillows?

Other things that can cause an increase of pressure requirement are: Colds, allergies, inadequate humidification.

Thanks for your thoughts, Neal. I will try loosening the mask a little and perhaps that will help. But all the possible causes you mention, including the mask, have been the same for the five months that I've been using CPAP. Yet in the last two weeks my pressure scores have strangely jumped from a range of 17 to 17.5 to a range of 19 to 19.5.

If you are on auto pap and having leaks the pressure will rise to compensate.

Thanks, Rock. That's helpful to know!

It's hard to control mask leaks at that pressure, or at least that's been my experience.  Have you taken the suggestion to try a mask liner?  Rock has the only logical explanation I can think of for your pressure to be rising.  How's it going now, Bob?

Mary--It's actually been going a lot better the last few nights. And I can't really say why. If it gets bad again, I'll look into mask liners. Perhaps this was just a bizarre week or two that can't be explained, since for months I'd been doing well and nothing of importance has really changed. We'll see.

Sorry, forgot to say: thanks to you and everyone for your interest, comments, and suggestions.

What is your auto-pap range?
