I'm a geek at heart, and love this kind of stuff. Check out the new blood pressure monitoring device being developed at MIT:

MIT's press release suggests that the technology behind this may be used to help sleep apnea patients as well: "Such devices could be used to keep tabs on hypertension as well as sleep apnea . . ." (excerpted from MIT monitoring device press release)

I wonder what data about sleep apnea they could extract with such a monitoring device worn around the finger, and how would the information be used: sleep stage info; arousals; apneas?

Such technology already exists and has been used to diagnose OSA for several years now. The WatchPAT is a device worn on the wrist that has two probes that attach to two fingers. One is a standard pulse oximeter, and the other is like a miniature blood pressure cuff that measures microscopic changes in arterial blood pressure. The technology was developed in Israel by Itamar Medical. As I understand it, it was an outgrowth of a military project that uses proprietary methods of filtering signals from noise. The PAT signal can distinguish between REM vs. NonREM sleep, as well as an AHI index. You can read more about the technology here.
THANK YOU, Daniel Levy! And Mike. I'd read about the WatchPAT before but never saw a picture. What a neat looking gadget! Much more attractive than MIT's. And looks more comfortable and sturdy as well.

SPO Medical is another Israeli company who makes some excellent oximeters - including the SPO 7500 recording wrist oximeter w.siftware which many xPAP users use to monitor their 02 overnight.
