I saw that.  It was good he speaking out about the "malady".  I did think, "well, at least he can afford to try as many masks as he needs to".
Shaq could be a great spokesman for the treatment of OSA, but I'm afraid that most celebrities who are under treatment have no real idea of the seriousness of the disease beyond "I have to wear this mask." For example, Rosie and Regis apparently have nothing to say, probably because they don't know much about it. If they knew what we know, they would be shouting from the rooftops.
I have had obstructive sleep apena for 7 years & been using several CPAP machines during this time.  Sleep apena 7 years ago was not really recognized by the medical insurance companies as "disorder" or even "illness", it made it tough to get coverage for a sleep study let along CPAP supplies.  I am hoping with Shaq's fame it will help shed more light and life to sleep apena and the fact that this is a "silent killer".
Amen Lisa. I also hope he takes his apnea and treatment public. Maybe then more celebs will come out of woodwork. This "silent killer" MUST be addressed!

Hey, this is great! Finally a celebrity is saying something about this disorder! I hope Shaq does become a bit of a public spokesman. If he is willing to speak openly about it, perhaps other celebrities might join in and help even more people become aware. This news does really need to get spread around. I am wondering how many celebrities who have it aren't really aware of how serious it is and how many are ashamed to admit to having it. People ridicule others who snore (a common condition for those with OSA). This causes people who snore to be ashamed of snoring. This makes them ashamed to admit to anyone, including their doctors, that they snore, so they continue to suffer when they might be among the many snorers who have OSA. Thank you, Shaq!

I am convinced that treatment of sleep apnea needs to go beyond CPAP and for those unable to tolerate the CPAP. There are properly fitted, ‘functual CPR type devices’, that can improve breathing, and possibility eliminate need of assisting devices.

Can you tell me more about these "devices"?  Thanks~

Yes, I would like to know more about the kind of devices you are talking about, belv156.

The function of the device is to simulate jaw positioning as would be performed in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and to improve breathing by corrective means.

The additional features are:

1.    Stops snoring when properly adjusted

2.    Improve nasal breathing (a gain of 18-20% 02 plus the stimulation of nitric oxide beneficial for controlling blood pressure)

3.    Should be worn for two or three hours per day plus during sleep when unable to tolerate the CPAP

Worn for two or three hours per day as active treatment

for those who sleep with the CPAP

     4.    Patient is encourage to talk with the appliance in the

          mouth

There is however a major constraint. The treatment site is close to Boston MA. There are approximately 5-6 initial visits for examination, diagnostics, consultation, delivery of appliance and three adjustments appointments.

The functional cpr like devices sound similar to dental appliances, but perhaps an improvement upon them. However, they would only work for some people. Having to go thru several surgeries to correct defects in my air path coupled with sleeping on my side has eliminated my need for cpap. However, such a device described would not have corrected my problem since it would have never dealt with the issues that caused my OSA. However, I am of the opinion that all options should be considered for each patient individually, and the best treatment or combination of treatments for that patient should be used. There is no one single treatment that is best for everyone. cpap is safe for every patient, but not necessarily the best for any particular patient. The treatment belv156 may be great for some people, but may be of no use for others.
