Side Solution Pillow

A few weeks ago a forum member on www.sleepguide.com asked for some forum members try a new pillow called the Side Solution Pillow. The poster wanted 10 forum members to use the pillow and then fill out a short survey. I sent an email as requested and didn’t hear anything. Several days went by and I hadn’t heard if I was selected to try the pillow. Another forum member posted and said that they had indeed heard via an email that they were chosen to try the pillow and then fill out a short questionnaire about their experience. Several of us responded that we hadn’t heard anything and the original poster replied to the thread and said they were still taking request to try the pillow. I sent my email and information again.

I am always the skeptic usually, and after a period of time figured it might be a scam as it didn’t appear that anyone had actually received a pillow to try. I even replied to the original thread that I had came to the conclusion it was a scam to gather email addresses, etc.

A week ago last Tuesday, I happened to be sitting on my porch talking with some of my kids when the UPS truck pulled up. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and found a Side Solution Pillow. The pillow packaged similar to what you would find in a retail store. The package insert was well laid out and had information regarding the pillow. The pillow appears well made and includes a pillow cover. I did not try a pillow case on it, but imagine it will be difficult to find one that fits it since it has a gusset of 7 inches all the way around it. Many pillow cases can not accommodate a pillow that thick. If one wanted, and what I did, was use the pillow case cover as the main pillow case. I looked on the website and did not notice any additional pillowcases for sale. This might be good niche for someone to fill since there seems to be several different types of these pillows now available.

The package insert states that the pillow “Cradles side sleeper’s head, neck, and shoulders for healthy nights’ sleep. Aligns body to help reduce pain and snoring. Helps mild sleep apnea. Perfect for cpap users. Features 260 thread count cover with Polyfiber fill. Measurements – 19 inches X 17 inches X 7 inches.” “Unique patented shape for multiple positions. Designed with a wide cutaway for shoulder support. Designed to support better breathing and CPAP usage.” Also on the package insert, “My practice has shown that the “Side Solution” Pillow reduces snoring, headaches, shoulder, back, and neck pain.” As stated by Dr. Paul R. Mettler PT. DPT – licensed doctor of physical therapy and inventor of the Side Solution Pillow.”

The first night I used this pillow I simply could not get comfortable. I tossed and turned and tossed and turned. After fighting with the pillow for several hours and only sleeping lightly, I decided to switch back to the Regenisis pillow that I normally use. I was able to go to sleep and slept the rest of the night until the alarm went off. The next day, I felt tired and groggy from not sleeping well. I decided not to use the pillow that night since I had a long day at work the following day. We had parent teacher conferences and when I finally got home was very tired. I decided to go ahead and try the Side Solution Pillow since I didn’t have to work the next day.

I tried sleeping on the pillow with the cutouts on the side. I found that the bulk of the inner fiber bunched up at or near the top of my head. I was, I admit, trying to sleep on my back at this point. I then turned on my side and placed my shoulder in the cut out and slept that way for a good portion of the night. The pillow was comfortable. When I tried to change sides though, I ran into a problem Since the pillow has a larger area on the top of the cut outs and less on the bottom, I had trouble and couldn’t find a comfortable position without literally changing the pillow over. I ended up doing that every time I wanted to turn over, I had to change the pillow as well. That annoyed me. When I tried to lay on my back for a short time to relieve my back pain, the extra filler fiber kept pushing my headgear out of whack and causing leaks (I use the Headrest).

I tried the pillow for a few nights and never felt completely rested when using it. Since hubby snores I suggested that he try it out and when he ended up changing sides the pillow ended up shoved over to the side and not used at all.

I feel the pillow has potential and will give it a try again when I have a few days off.

If you sleep mainly on one side and don’t move much this pillow would probably work great for you, but if you toss and turn, not so much probably.
