The brother of one of my daughter's best friends passed away last week.  He had severe sleep apnea and was sleeping without his equipment.  He went without oxygen to his brain for almost 30 minutes.  The EMTs did all they could and the ER put him on a respirator, but the family finally called it on Friday.  He was 45 years old.

what a shame. very important reminder for us all. thank you for providing it.
Sheila,
Thanks for sharing this vital information..
I was advised by my therapist to use the mask even for short naps.

That's so sad, I'm very sorry to hear the bad news and am reminded on how important it is for me to not sleep without mine if I can help it. I'm so sorry for your loss.

-Elissa-
my daughter's neighbor was in his 30's and he had severe sleep apena and he laid down to take a nap on a saturday afternoon and he did not put his mask on and he died in his sleep, kind of scary, my brother had sleep apena and he died from that as well but he was in his 80's so who knows if that was the cause of death with him.
Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers died the same way. Just taking a nap on the couch. That was the day I decided to get my sleep study done. Sure enough I had severe sleep apnea. I suspected I had it because I would wake up gasping for air. I wonder how many people have passed away never knowing they even had apnea?
Good thoughts to you and his family.
I am sorry to hear of your loss. Thank you for the reminder. I've been sleeping ( if you can call it that) for about a month without my equipment. There has been varying reason ranging from allergies to frustration. Your reminder helped me remember why I got involved with my cpap in the first place. My health and the well fare of my family. I'm 49. Thanks for the eye opener. Peace be with you and your family. Raymond P.
What a tragedy, I have had OSA apparently since my 20's or earlier. I never sensed the amount of brainpower I was losing until other symptoms led me to medical help. After diagnosis(over 10 years ago) I tried cpap but couldnt adjust to it so I spent another 6 years without treatment. I finally borrowed a unit and began to notice the benefits of better sleep. I use my machine even when I take a nap. Always. It is a shame that, like myself, so many dont realize what this condition does to them over time. I have health losses that are not likely to ever be recovered from-at least not completely. Thanks for reminding us that, no matter what treatment one uses, it is necessary if one wants the life they were born to have. This is or is a major contributor to the health crisis both here and around the world. Thanks so much for sharing.
My condolences to the family. It saddens me to hear of the loss of another family member to OSA.
We've got to get the word out about this disease and put a stop to it.
Please accept my condolences. Thank you for sharing this and reinforcing how important it is to always use our CPAP's. It hadn't occurred to me to use mine for napping. I will now.
I have heard this before and just did a quick search on the death rate, this article from last years talks about an increased death risk. Again, it is sad to loose anyone to a preventable disease. Your vocolization of this issue will save some lives.
